putting my final application in, need some help from college students or college bound city members. one of the personal statements is How has your family history, culture or environment influenced who you are? I cant seem to word it well enough any help? +rep to be given? lol thanks gc
I said that because my family didn't have a lot when I was growing up it urged me to be the best that I could be so that when I go older I could achieve the things I wanted. You could say like because I'm hispanic, I grew up with a latino culture and an american one, that's just an example, I dunno what your heritage is lol
Any chance this is a FL school? UF had a similar ? when i applied, and i think FSU had that exact question 2 years ago. But anyways, heres how I would go about this: pick 2 or 3 qualities about yourself you want to write about (the number depends on how long this essay is) Now that you have your personal qualities, chose some story (or BS the story) that demonstrates those qualities Keep in mind, these collges arent looking to see how great you can tell stories, they want to see how great you can form arguments and structure your papers. Therefore, spend as little time possible telling your story Instead try and follow a structure like: Intro paragraph - introduce the story, say it shows that you demonstrate quality X, Y, z. 2nd paragraph you will explain how the story demonstrates quality X. Thats the key right there, dont tell the story, instead tell HOW the story exhibits quality X... If you are writing about family history, or perhaps living in certain troubing circumstances, dont write about those circumstances but HOW those circumstances effect you 3rd paragraph will parallel the 2nd except talking about quality Y Think of it as writing a really good English paper, when you write you dont re-tell what happened in the story, the reader already knows that. Instead you argue how the literary features used by the author manipulate the reader. so the construction of a good english paper may be: Introduce some claim, introduce some quotation that demonstrates that claim. And then discuss the effects of the literary feature for ~3 sentences. Similarly this essay should be structured: Introduce some claim ('my circumstances exhibit quality X'), introduce some story that demonstrates that claim. And finally discuss how that story llustrates that quality.
