So im in my 3rd day of germing, and was wonder was is a ideal temp for a germ process? I had my seeds in distilled water for about a day and a half then I put them on a paper towel and yada yada... so about a day after I put them in the towels, a couple cracked and are showing roots, but i live in Vegads and its cold as fuck here.... the house is around 72-74 my temp gun is showing the actual paper towels are at about 68.... Let me know if its to cold or what I can do about it! Thanx!
Any warm dark place should be fine 72-74 is fine. I'm guessing they will sprout soon so be ready to transplant.
Yea right now they're in between paper towels on a plate and a bowl over them with two towels wrapped around them, hopefully they will all crack by morning!
i put them directly into the paper towels and put them in a bag or cling film or something and sit them on top of my modem or the sky box or whatever, they dont dry up and stay nice and snug, in a day or two there always good to go
You put then on the modem to keep them warm I presume, and I'll try that if the other odd ball seeds don't crack, do you ever have to re hydrate the bag at all?
not wit the cling film on it I dont need to worry that it dries out, im opening every 24 hours to check on it and as soon as it pops it goes straight into soil,, yeah the modems nice its just warm, perfect temp when I check on the seeds I put the paper towel to my face and I can feel how snug warm they are, then after they pop I put them in there pots and leave that on the modem until they sprout then they have a constant germination temperature and that little bit of under heat helps them greatly to sprout strong
I shoot for around 80 or so for germinating. Using a heat mat or electric blanket for heat works well. 68 is too cold and is most likely part of the reason they are taking so long.
Is there any way that I could damage the seeds? Like if they stay germinating in too cold of conditions for to long can they end up dying or something?
modem works fine for me,, were in the middle of a recession u know?
I never said not to use a modem. If that is what you got then go for it. A heat mat can be had for less than $20, hardly a large expense. They can also be used if you ever decide to use starter cubes or pucks instead of messing with paper towels. I used the paper towel method for a while, but a good seed starting setup was a great investment. Now I just drop seeds in and wait.
Is there any way that I could damage the seeds? Like if they stay germinating in too cold of conditions for to long can they end up dying or something?
Yes, if they stay cold and wet for too long they may not germ at all. Warm them up if it hasn't been more than a few days and they will most likely pop. If they have been sitting there wet for two weeks then I wouldn't have a lot of hope for them.
they haven't been germing for more than 4 days, but like I said they havnt been in the towels the entire time, I'll check them out once I get home and let you guys know what's up with them!
So i just got home and check them. The three that didn't pop; did! I sanded them down before I sprayed them last so that probably help... But now the question is... Should I just go Ahead and plant them now? Or wait another day so the seeds that just poped can grow the tap root out a bit. And im also going to do what everyone suggested and just put the paper towels in a zip lock back and ill throw it ontop of my Aux stero in my room (stays pretty warm)
I like to germinate them all and let them sprout all at the same temperature, the last guy with the heating mat is the way to go if you have it, if you dont then its not the end of the world, just keep them warm like a baby and they will do well,, ive germinated seeds in a colder enviroment and they can still pop aslong as its not too cold,, too cold will really slow the seeds down,, and ive noticed after having seeds pop in a warm enviroment then be planted in much cooler soil to take a while longer for them to sprout and when they do they are never as strong at the stems as the ones who have had a nice warm place to germ,, also I dont know if its of any significence but when I lie the seeds down on the wet paper I do it so the crack point or ridge part of the seeds is coming into contact with the towel, instead of lying them down flat I put a little pressure on the area that splits
