Gear for Making Gummies on the Regular

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by dub12Nation, Oct 9, 2020.

  1. Hello, new member here.

My wife has a lot of chronic pain due to several health issues and gummies have been a life saver for her. She has a ton of dietary issues she has to deal with, so we're going to make our own gummies (vegan/gf/etc.).

My question is about equipment. We're remaining budget conscious but don't mind spending a bit on a few key things to make the process easier.

    1) We've heard most of our friends are using disposable pipettes but we're curious about repeating pipettors. The industrial ones seem to average around $50 compared to the scientific ones which are closer to $400. I read that the basic industrial pipettes are slightly less accurate (ok-ish for our purposes), but the real issue is high viscosity liquids. Several articles said that positive displacement pipettes were best for viscous liquids, but these start out at around $300. Has anyone used a repeator pipette, or are most of you using glass droppers or disposables?

    2) Warming plate with temperature gauge. We would love a small warming plate with temperature gauge to accurately control the heating of the distillate for distribution. The scientific ones start at like $400, but cooktop ones are around $70, and beverage warmers are even cheaper, around $30. Do any of you use a controlled warming plate for this purpose? If so, any recommendations?

    3) We'd love to hear about any bloopers, mistakes, etc. that anybody has learned, things to avoid or watch out for, etc.

Thank you in advance for any information you can share!

  2. You might want to consider herb/oil capsules instead, assuming the digestive system can handle whole herb.
They are the easiest edible to make, and can be made any strength you want, up to about 40 mg thc each for size 00 capsules.
Here's a procedure for some approximately 25 mg thc size 00 capsules.
    1. Decarb more herb than is needed, about 1/2 oz. Break into small pieces, then bake at 240 F for 40 min.
    2. Grind to fine powder.
    3. Mix together the following ingredients in the following proportions. The amounts can be multiplied or divided by anything to get a different number or different strength.
    (7.5 g DecarbedHerbPowder) + (30 g AnyOil) + ( 7.5 g Lecithin) = 50*(Size00Capsules)
    4. Bake mixture for 40 min @ 220 F to make it more digestible.
    5. Put into capsules while keeping mixture hot and well mixed.

Any utensil can be used, but I like these

These are the capsules I use

To fill capsules, a capsule holder will be needed.

And a candy dropper with its tip cut off

  3. How many do you plan to make at a time and how often? Unless you plan on making a year's worth at a time every week then I doubt that you need any really expensive equipment like mechanical scientific pipettes. I don't see a lot of methods that use pipettes or droppers except to fill molds and there are easier ways to do that. There's nothing very viscous about making gummies until then.

A dual warming/hot plate dedicated to your candy is a good idea and a temperature guide is a must but digital isn't necessary since the burner temperature doesn't correlate with the internal temperature of the item being heated.

If you really want to get into the gummies I would suggest a good scale so that you can weigh out your ingredients with more accuracy for better results.

Get a dehydrator. You'll want to dry your gummies and that's better than just leaving them out to air dry for days.

And you may want to purchase a heated magnetic stirrer. Not necessarily for the gummies but is handy for a number of other cannabis infusions. :)
