So where the hell does the gay accent come from? and why do people choose to talk like that? I mean its gota be a choice to speak like that right because you see hardly any straight guys with a camp accent.

I personally think it's a mix of being raised by a mother and 3 sisters, and a choice on the part of the gay man.

Maybe talking camp is something u just kinda pick up - dunno really but ur right about the voice lol. Gotta say i know a few gay lads who if u heard em talk you would never say they were gay tho.
ya this one is a mystery to me also cause i have met straight guys that are a tad effeminate before, not flaming but enough that a lot of people would assume yep that would be a gay dude. Then on the flip side there are very masculine gay dudes that except for the fact that their grooming is way too good for a straight guy they are not effeminate at all. So i have no clue man seriously
My best guess is that it depends on how much time they spend involved in the gay community in their area. Hell if I know where it started or why, but I'm sure they pick it up from each other, just like anyone else picking up an accent.
Is a New York accent a choice? How about an English one? Sorry, but this is a silly question. For the record I've met plenty of straight men that are very effeminate and it's not a choice, it's just how they are.
Of course a REGIONAL accent is not a choice but a camp one (alot of times) is Im not being ignorant its just that a high percentage of gay people talk with a camp voice no matter where they are from. Its not like goths have an accent or people who like football have an accent (bad example but an example none the less).
Possibly, but I've met a couple black dudes that used hardcore ebonics, who have always lived here in Arizona suburbs, & whos parents don't use ebonics. I honestly think its a choice haha.
I smoked next to a camp sounding guy recently (last friday) . I don't know if he is actually gay but he was gossiping with a really hot girl about guys so I guess he kinda was a little bit gay.
Well think of it like this..... There's a man who realizes he is gay at the age of 25. He spoke perfectly regularly up until then, but then he started hanging out with gay men often who have a camp accent (never heard that term before lol). The more he is around it and exposed to it the more likely he is to pick it up, just like a regional accent. Obviously that doesn't apply to everyone but the point I'm trying to make is that it can easily be similar to a regional accent in the way that you might pick it up from being around it so much, smell what I'm cooking?
I haven't actually heard anyone speak like that in real life, are you sure it's not just a false stereotype?
