I've really been undecided on Drake for awhile (cue haters). He's got some great stuff, and some seriously garbage, but after reading an interview with him, he really seems like a straight forward, down to earth dude, who has enormous potential if he can pull it all together. The below quote is pretty endearing to hear from a dude who is on nothing but the up and up. Pretty tight how he got into rap anyhow. Drake: How I got into rapping was, my dad was in jail for two years and he shared a cell wit this dude who didn't really have anyone to speak to. So, he used to share his phone time with this dude and at the time I was probably 16 or 17, this dude was like 20-22, and he would always rap to me over the phone-it was Poverty, that was his rap name. After while I started to get into it and I started to write my own shit down. And after a while, he would call me and we would just rap to each other. After he got out we kept in touch and I just kept writing my shit down. Complex: Listening to your earlier mixtapes, as well as So Far Gone, a constant theme seems to be the notion that “All That Glitters Ain't Gold.†It seems like you try to be honest and downplay the rapper lifestyle, like when you talk about buying a Phantom but regretting it. Drake: Yeah, well, to be even more honest, I leased a Phantom instead of buying one, 'cause I didn‘t have enough money to buy a Phantom, I leased a Phantom because that's what I thought I needed to do. And I've done a lot of things to just enjoy my nights a little more and to feed my ego. And that's kinda why I rap about it, because a lot of people are like, “If he ever steps out of line, I'm gonna say Drake's wack.†So the only choice I have is to be honest with my listeners. And that's not to say it's not a glamorous life and it's not fun, but the reality is it's great for the average person to hear a musician's reality because we all seem so unattainable and so out of reach that when you bring yourself back to eye level with a fan and do it in the right way…
lol I was actually thinking of posting a drake thread. if you don't like drake, youve probably only listened to his shit with wayne and youngmoney whack rappers. drake's good songs are about REAL shit in his life. listen to fear, the calm, lust for life, say whats real, songs like that. hes a good rapper, but him signing with youngmoney really killed my liking of his music, cuz now i know hes doing it for the money
I honestly think he signed with Young Money because he was in awe of Lil Wayne. Why anybody likes that weasel bastard is beyond me, but I'm sure Drake shit his pants over the fact that Wayne liked him. I don't think he is in it for the money, at least not any more than the rest of the rappers these days, I just think that if the biggest name in rap presents you with an oppurtunity to make it BIG, then you will accept. No question. I hated Drake at first, honestly I stlll kind of hate him. I feel like he has so much potential to do something that will truly send a message, but for every flash of good, he comes right back and raps about hoes on a Lil Wayne track. It just seems like a waste to me, and it kinda makes me view him as a fraud, because now he acts almost as if he hates the fame and all that comes along with it.....But he still puts his name out everywhere with all this shitty music (a.k.a. Bedrock)
thats why I think hes in it for the money, cause youngmoney is on top right now (like it or not) and who wouldn't want to be with the most successful team? wish he signed with a good label
Yeah, but to a certain extent every musician or rapper is. Tell me the truth, if you were presented a chance to do something for a hundred dollards, then offered the chance to do the same thing for a million dollars, wouldn't you would choose to do it for a million? Whether or not that is his sole motive, you can't really chastise him for taking the biggest amount. ^ Lol I actually just said "chastise".........I'm a douche sometimes.
drake can actually rap..he a hell of a lot more lyrical than b.o.b, cudi, wiz or currency..him n j cole are the top new guys imo..they can outshine other bigger rappers on they own tracks yeah he does some stuff for bitches..but dont u think his is more realistic to listen to then most of these dudes talkin? and my respect for him got a lot higher wen he used over as his first single instead of him singin to women and ps that interview is like a year old..but that last line is pretty much why im a fan.
and i just wanna add.. he only signed with YM cuz he owns 100 percent of his publishing and copyrights..nothing more u could ask for as an artist.
drakes trash. won't catch a real street dude bumpin drake ever.. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNqgR4ozbL8]YouTube - Drake - Mo City Don (Houston, Texas)[/ame] fraudulent ass. crowd has no respect for him either. notice they all keep singin when he says "hold on guys!". lol.. in the words of the late great dave chappelle "THEY SHOULDA NEVER GAVE YOU *****S MONEY!"
lol man im so high right now, and i just geeked out to this picturing a gay guy say that. you made my night dude
The fact that Drake signed with Young Money is a fucking disappointment. I can understand that it would be tough to say no to that, but Drake does seem like a dude with some potential and who is a lot better skillwise than most mainstream rappers today. He can out rap Wayne already and he is obviously better than the rest of those clowns. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to listen to him, because I get too much of a pop music vibe in a lot of his songs he uses to get radio play (best I ever had, bedrock). That shit just puts a bad taste in my mouth.
That's the problem with this kind of music nowadays. Since when does a "real street dude" have to be "bumping" music in order for it to be good? If you ask me, Lil' Wayne is a huge poser. He comes nothing close to a gangster yet he raps about gangs and has a teardrop tattoo. I respect Drake for refraining from the wannabe hood rat attire that every rapper seems to be wearing. I don't listen to Drake or Wayne, but I prefer Drake wayyy more.
