Full spectrum tincture MCT oil only

Discussion in 'Cannabis & Weed Edibles: Cooking & Recipes' started by sethd513, Dec 22, 2019.

  1. How we doing? So my question has to do with making flower into tincture. I’ve decarbed at 225 for 30 minutes, and I’ve also double boiled my mct oil for 8 hours on high reaching 220 in the last 1.5 hours WITHOUT decarbing the weed. Both work. What do you guys do when making flower into tincture with mct oil only. I don’t care to know about alcohol based tinctures. Thank you.

  2. Every minute optimally decarbed herb is subjected to significant heat destroys thc.
Some people avoid additional heat entirely by ingesting decarbed herb powder put into capsules, and report good results.
Personally, I like to try to change tiny amounts of thc into cbn by using short infusion times.
BrassNwood's excellent method recommends two 20 minute infusions @ 220 F, separated by a freezing.
I'm too lazy for the freezing, so I do a single infusion for 20-60 minutes, depending on the final product.

I make concentrated oil tinctures, nutella spreads, and cookies.
Concentrated oil tincture can be made by reducing alcohol tincture to FECO, and then replacing the alcohol with some oil and lecithin.
Nutella/NutButter spreads can be made by directly infusing decarbed herb powder into them.
Cookies can be made by infusing the recipe oil with decarbed herb powder.

  3. I extract with 99% ISO, evaporate the alcohol, decarb the hash oil in an oil bath @240F and then mix the hot hash oil with enough MCT oil to dilute it enough to dose easily and accurately.

  4. You might be able to do this safely, but I'd guess many people can't.
I don't dare use isopropyl, because I fear I might poison myself.

Accidents are things that happen that we didn't think would happen.

  5. Yea I appreciate the input but like the first post says I want nothing to do with alcohol. I’ll say any solvent at that. Just trying to figure out what options I have with mct oil and fresh flower and if I’m missing something or not. I did see today they make this decarbing machine it’s about 200$ on amazon. I do feel like my oven is fine enough. Does the smell bother me, yes to a point and of course If my wife is walking out the door to go to work but i do like the idea of dry decarbed flower in capsule form. It never seems to fail that my capsules leak every so slightly no matter what.

  6. Your fear of using ISO is irrational. It's impossible to poison yourself making QWISO unless instead of evaporating, you drank it instead. If it was dangerous surely someone would have been harmed by now.

  7. I follow instructions at ardentcannabis.com for this process. Very concise.

  8. People forget, and that can cause mistakes. Maybe somebody accidentally takes a swig.
Isopropyl might contain heavy hydrocarbons that don't distill off. I have no proof, just worries.

It might be that many people have already been harmed, but don't know the cause.
Or people might be getting small harms that accumulate over time, and don't realize the harm.

Fears about using poison in edibles are never irrational.
    Accidents happen.

Can a chemist safely use iso? Certainly.
Can a septuagenarian with a failing memory, or somebody processing while stoned? Maybe not.

  9. Yes, I am a septuagenarian with a failing memory, that's why I gave up my hobby making fireworks. If it's possible for you to space out and drink the alcohol instead of evaporating it then I agree, you shouldn't use it. You also shouldn't drive a car, you may hit the gas instead of the brake. Grain alcohol is also poisonous yet you use it making edibles. Water is poisonous in quantity, even oxygen is poisonous under certain circumstances. I can see that you're not going to change your mind even though you can't show QWISO is harmful and I'm good with that.

  10. Yes, everything is dangerous, even air, because too much of it can cause you to hyperventilate, get dizzy, fall, and hurt yourself.
But some things are much more dangerous than others.

I'll drink 1 oz ethanol, and you drink 1 oz iso, then let's compare notes about relative harmfulness.

I completely agree that you personally can safely use iso, but it could be dangerous for others.
I'm worried about the people that cause food companies to put warning labels on those little desiccant packages "do not eat."

  11. One of our highly esteemed members, PSam, did lab analysis showing ideal decarb is 240F for 40 minutes.

You're probably referring to the Ardent. I own one, and I'm very happy with it. I picked it up with the optional infusion sleeve for $180 with a coupon. They just ran a "Purple Friday" promotion selling the base unit for $160, so you can find a deal if you're willing to look and wait. I'm very happy with mine, and it might just answer your primary question about infusing into oils without any solvents.

They detail this on their site, but you basically just run it once with dry material to decarb. Once complete, you add your desired volume of oil to infuse into, probably add some lecithin too (at a 1:6 ratio by volume), and then run it through the Ardent on a second cycle until complete. At that point you can either filter out the plant material or not, up to you...but there's still some goodness in there so if you filter, you may want to just toss the strained plant matter into a jar and toss it in the back of the freezer. I can confirm that it's quite nice on peanut butter and toast like that...but for maximum retention and potency, leave it in the oil. From there, I'm fond of capsules, but it's up to you at that point.

  12. When people ask Grasscity questions about making oil we shouldn't assume they are complete idiots but maybe that's where we are in 2019. IMO using perfectly good drinking alcohol as a solvent is wasteful but if I was making oil to sell commercially or even to private parties I'd use ethanol, not because iso is dangerous but because using Everclear is a good selling point when talking to a certain category of customers.

I like the warning label cautioning not to get your penis caught in the zipper, at least they're only warning about the hazards of zippers instead of saying to only buy pants with button fly jeans.

  13. Maybe? From what I read, half the population thinks the other half are idiots.

As long as you put a good emphasis on the possible dangers, I don’t think posting anything should be out of bounds.

  14. I wonder which half I’m on pretty sure I’m on the better side.

  15. He speaks and no one listens to him. You get a way better yield with 99% ISO. If you can't figure out how to do it safely then don't do it. Meanwhile back in the wilderness.....:D I listen.

  16. When I started extracting for Tincture it was for oral use and needed to be drinkable grade Alcohol.
Later I got a request for RSO oil capsules for an immune compromised person so to insure what I was providing was as harmless as possible I continued making RSO with drinking grade Alcohol.

Once I bought a small pot still and started recovering most of my alcohol the cost dropped down and I only need to buy enough new alcohol to make up the 10% losses I still have.
We still have to advise people not to vape cooking oils so yes in some cases we need to treat part of the population like Children.
