fruit flies have invaded my apartment.

  1. i don't understand why. i keep the place clean, don't leave food out, vacuum every day, etc, but there are fruit flies everywhere! not just in the kitchen, but in the bedroom and bathroom as well.
i've got a mason jar of vinegar/alcohol next to the compost bin, to try and control them, but how do i get rid of them elsewhere?
and will they get into my weed and multiply and infest my buds?

  2. They're a bitch

Set out a glass of apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap in it. They'll be attracted to the smell, and then they'll drown because the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar

  3. Do you have standing water anywhere?

  4. Well, there are a few possible reasons why. We had a similar thing happening and it was very perplexing because I am a SUPER clean and meticulous person. I was reduced to just pulling EVERYTHING out (fridge, stove, anything) and the culprit was an old nasty ass black cucumber in the BOTTOM of our trashcan.. my roommates just kept putting a new bag in and never noticed it. There's usually a source such as this when you are a generally clean, because otherwise fruit flies have no reason to come around.

  5. Probably coming from a nasty neighbors place

  6. 1. obtain plastic cup(s)
    2. place small amt of fruit inside
    3. seal with plastic wrap, poke holes in said wrap with toothpick
    4. Watch all those fuckers fly in, and not be able to escape mwhahaha

  7. That's what's attracting them.

  8. Had the same issue, I went out and bought a can of raid.

  9. I've been having this problem, too. Usually whenever I have bananas I get a ton of them, but I'm not really sure where to keep my bananas that will keep fruit flies away without speeding up the ripening process.

The tricks people above have mentioned are ones I've read about too. I've tried putting pieces of fruit and other things the flies are attracted to in a water bottle and then rolling up a piece of paper into a funnel shape and sticking it in the bottle.... the fruit flies get in but then can't find their way out because the opening is too small.

The compost sounds like it could be the culprit, there's no way that could be kept outside somewhere instead?

About the weed, I've forgotten my weed out before and it didn't appear as though the fruit flies were interested in it at all, so I don't think that should be an issue.

  10. The compost bin IS the culprit as I mentioned before.

Rotting fruit skins, pits, etc. is what's attracting them. This isn't rocket science, nor some unsolvable mystery.

  11. That sucks bro. I feel you though, cuz I got a shit load of fleas all over my house that don't seem to want to fuck off

  12. Could be anything from old food to a dead mouse corpse in the wall.. You never know ahha

  13. Bug bomb your apartment.

  14. Wrong flying insect.

  15. right in the fuckin kitchen...yep same here :(

  16. Compost bin is what's attracting them....obvifuckingously!

  17. No kidding, WTF is wrong with everybody in this thread?

It's not standing water, it's not a dead mouse, IT'S THE ROTTING FRUIT IN THE COMPOST BIN THAT'S ATTRACTING THEM.

FRUIT flies are attracted to FRUIT.

Remove the rotting fruit and in a few hours the fruit flies will be GONE.

  18. obvious answer is obvious.

i've done this, and they're still hanging around. i can't think of any other source, but there has to be, since when i empty the bin, they still persist.

  19. Venus fly traps

  20. How long has it been empty? Are all traces of rotting fruit gone?
