PARIS--French unemployment stabilized in March, data published Friday by the labor ministry showed, a sign that President Francois Hollande may be close to cutting the number of jobless, a key pledge he made over a year ago.

The number of Category A job seekers--defined as registered job seekers who are fully unemployed--rose by 1,600 units to 3,349,300. The rise wasn't large enough to result in a percentage increase.
French unemployment remains at its highest level since comparable records began in 1996, Labor Ministry figures have showed. The March data still showed a 4.1% increase on the total number of jobless people from the same month last year.
The figures come as the government of Mr. Hollande, whose Socialist party has suffered a setback in recent municipal elections, is pushing through reforms to make it cheaper for businesses to hire workers, in a bid to cut the record number of those out of work.
Mr. Hollande had promised in 2012 to "invert the unemployment curve" by the end of last year.
The Socialist government was relying on a multi-billion-euro program to boost the number of state-sponsored jobs to reduce unemployment. But Mr. Hollande has since acknowledged that this alone isn't enough and that France also needs to boost its lagging economic growth rate.
The French president plans to cut the taxes paid by employers in an effort to restore profit margins and allow businesses room to invest and create jobs.

I love it when socialists realize their delusions do not translate to the real world and in this case we didn't have to suffer through the deaths of millions of people in attempt to achieve the socialist ideal. Ahh progress.
