Fox Farm Soil Battle

  1. Happy Frog vs. Ocean Forest

Both seem to have great ingredients. Is there a particular reason most people here use Ocean Forest exclusively? Happy Frog seems more cost effective without sacrificing ingredients. Am I missing out on some info?

    Thanks for the help

  2. Its been recomended to me to mix them 50/50 more than just use one or the other.

  3. I use both. Happy Frog is fairly new to the market; not entirely new but it has not been out near as long as Ocean Forest. Most experienced growers use what works best for them; kind of a "if it is not broke don't fix it" attitude, myself included. I only tried it b/c my Hydro store was out of FFOF, and had some sample bags of this from the distributor so he sold them to me cheap, this was about 3 yrs ago. I used it, and have mixed it with OF and extra perlite since. If there is any difference in the 2, it is maybe HF is not quite as hot as OF.

  4. happy frog's more of a micro-active soil with less ferts more or less... i spose it's personal preference, but both are good soils... you'd just have to nute sooner with the happy frog

  5. Kind of this... It's really a toss up.

I think people like Happy Frog because of it's lower nutrient level than OF. Simply because they can use their own nutes and have easier to predict outcomes. Certain strains will be picky about my fert techniques when in combination of OF, especially during mid-veg when I start to kick up the fertilizing a bit. Sure, I should predict this, but it doesn't happen with all strains, which is kind of the shitter. However, I don't ever really have fertilizing problems after that stage.

OF is famous simply because it works. Experienced MJ growers use what works, and because HF is kind of new, most people haven't probably made the change. Human beings are creatures of habit, don't want change unless it's needed.

  6. Thanks everyone for the great feedback i think im gunna mix em.

either one is fine. your yield but be too different anyway. Hell, I use Miracle grow and some random micro nutes and my grow does just fine. The reason why its soo much better to get mg is because its soo damn powerful and it can burn your plants. this is why its better because you use less plant food. most mg plant food is like 24-15-15 or sometimes higher and thats a good thing because you want high concentrations of npk in your grow box... but not too high to burn the plants. I recommend using 1/4 nutes until plant gets some leaves on it.. then increase it and throw in some micro nutes and you are good to go...

BUT if you have the money, just get a high priced soil that pretty much does the same thing... I would like to plant a plant on the same day as someone else using fox farm and while I am using mg with micro nutes.. I bet no one would even tell a difference after we harvest.

  8. im new to the sight but not to growing i use fox farm nut and just promix using soil with nut in it makes it harder to flush in my opinion hope this helps

  9. I'm currently using FFOF, FFHF, Roots Organic, and Roots 707. I have some plants in pure pots of each soil, some in various mixtures, and then some mixed with Light Warrior and/or Roots Coco.

To be honest, aside from the frequency of watering being higher in the Coco heavy mixes, I see no appreciable difference in growth rates or plant health depending on the soil mix.

    My favorite mix:
    1 part Roots Coco
    1 part light warrior
    2 parts Roots Organic
    2 parts Roots 707
    2 parts Happy frog
(1 part worm compost if desired)

  10. Yeah, I use MG now but the fungus gnats are all getting stuck in the bud I hate it. Time to step it up to the FF line.

Thanks everyone for the extra advice. It's gunna make my next project way better.

  11. Hate to break it to you, but fungus gnats aren't because of your soil, it's because of your watering techniques and your grow area. Also, keep in mind that gnats won't go away unless you kill them, so get on that...

Gnats WILL kill your plants by destroying your roots.

  12. oh hot damn. i'm on it. choppin in 2 days anyway

  13. not saying your wrong, but there's been a ton of bug problems directly associated to MG soil... there's a grow journal on here that has a side by side MG vs Organic soil and bugs sprung out of the MG soil there too... not to mention several other users of MG soil have had bug problems, when after switching to other soils, they stopped...

i agree how you water and where your setup is can greatly contribute, but MG soil seemingly has dormant bug larva in its mix...

  14. Knatrol or BTI for the knats, it comes in 5gal buckets some hydro- stores tap it off into pints, I got some on sunday and now its in power form 1-tbsp/gal.
Or diatriatus earth (sp) same thing it attacks the shell of the lavae and disolves it.
Some put a layer of perlite on top of the soil or green sand.
As soon as I see any I start watering with BTI, actually I just use BTI when I water only as a standard precaution, I don't add it to nutes & water, no reason just personal pref.
