Foliar Additives

  1. Hello Everyone.
My first post, so i should thank everyone for all the info here.. Been reading for weeks and have learned a lot.

I have a question about botanicare "Sweet"; specifically if it's possible (and/or useful) to apply as a foliar spray.
I plan on using the dutchmaster penetrator for wetting and opening up the leaf, btw.

It's just carbs, aminos and vitamins I know...
I have seen some stuff suggesting almost everything is better absorbed/utilized when misted on with a good wetting agent. But I haven't been able to find any reference of anyone doing so with this specific product, so I don't know if it would be a waste of time/product.

Perhaps I am a little concerned about the cane sugar recrystalizing on the plants
and ending up with sugary (literally ;)) produce.. It would be funny, I admit. But also very very sad.

Any thoughts/suggestions/even-slightly-related-comments would be most appreciated.

    peace and thanks,
    myc

p.s. please feel free to unleash any supplimental foliar feeding related information you may have in your brains.. im hungry for your brains!

  2. Mate i personally have'nt used sweet as a foliar spray .... but penetrator is an awsome wetting agent .... dutchmaster also have their own cabohydrate foliar spray MAX-FX .... you can use all three of their foliar agents in the same spray .... in 1 litre of water add 60 mls penetrator 60mls Folitech 60 mls Max-fx spray on together .... folitech increases the light availability to the plants so they can absorb more light and max-fx put carbs straight into the leaves.... seems to work well ....

  3. ^^do you have a link for that folitech stuff?? sounds interesting.
it should say on the container whether it's acceptable as a foliar feed. but it makes sense to say don't use it, because the carbs and stuff it has in it is absorbed at the roots. i don't know if the leaves have the right kind of receptors to take that kind of thing in. i'd be interested to find out for sure, though so i know for future reference.

  4. The folitech is part if the dutchmaster lineup.. their site is dutchmaster.com.au i belive (beware: it was slow like ass last i was there).

But yea, conflicting information everywhere I look :D

What got me thinking was part of a dutchmaster ad i saw in a "max-yeild" mag:

"...Root fed hydroponic suppliments based on or containing amino acids, enzymes, carbohydrates, proteins and organics cannot possibly work as claimed because those ingredients can't actually get to where they are needed. To be effective, these compounds must be transported to the leaves via the roots, but if they can't get there, they can't work, it's that simple! That's a big claim and one that's taken 18 long months to prove. Exhaustive research & testing carried out by Dutch Masters R&D team in conjunction with the University or British Columbia has conclusively shown, once and for all, that roots cannot take up and transport amino acids, complex carbohydrates, proteins and organics to the leaves. Our University research has conclusively shown that these compounds are primarily blocked from entering the roots and the little that does penetrate is not effectively transported to the leaves, where it is needed."

blah blah blah, they go on to say that foliar spraying these very same products with penetrator will deliver 100% of all that crap to the leaves.

I know this is just an ad in a very ad heavy free magazine.. but this sounds like a very serious thing to say with the backing of a University study.
*Not the claim of their Penetrator product being the shit; but the claim they make, said to be supported by the UBC study, that normal root feeding of these suppliments is basically useless*

Any plant physiologists, biologists or biochemists in tha house? ;)

I guess no matter what, i'll end up giving it a try, just to find out first hand.. but if anyone has anything else to add, please do so. I'll see what else I can dig up and post.

    piece,
    myc

  5. well. so far so good.
i sprayed with penetrator, folitech, sweet and liquid karma and seems to have done no harm.
things have been exploding since using just penetrator and folitech so i can't exactly say how much more the sweet and LK is pumpin things up.

i can say that i'm surprised no one else has chimed in on my last question-type-tangent-thing about carb, amino, and other such suppliments (sweet, s-daddy, LK, etc) being virtually useless when applied to the root mass. perhaps "relatively useless" is a better way of putting it.. relative to foliar application (though these university studies have apparently proven that nearly nothing of the carbs, aminos, etc is brought to the foliage from the roots) .

i'm sorry if these things have just been covered before and i'm just being newb about it all.
a rough average of $30each for these suppliments/enhancers just makes me wonder a little harder than usual about the science and reality beneath the shiny marketing. also makes me a little paranoid about if i'm making the most efficient use of said expensive goo's.
oh capitalism, what have you done to us honest farmers ;)

*dear mods: should i have posted this in advanced? if any of you gentle moderator folk think it would be better there, please feel free to toss her over.

  6. hey guys i'm not an expert but i read a thread last night about using mollasses (sorry prolly mispelled) which does the same thing at a fraction of the cost. if this is wrong and someone knows anything about this i would love to know before i go out and purchase some. thx guys
