Over the last few months, Jon Stewart has deemed himself the arbiter of sanity, civility and exposer of Nazi/Hitler hypocrisy. From his viral "Glenn Beck - Nazi tourettes" clip, to his recent skewering of Fox News over what he says is their hypocrisy in claiming not to call political opponents Nazis. This made me wonder if Stewart himself was guilty of the same hypocrisy. Seeing as how he tells people to be civil when he's not civil himself, I figured it would be easy. This assumption was correct , because I was able to find a great example after 5 minutes of searching. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wCSDa-Qtmw]YouTube - Jon Stewart Implies Pat Buchanan is a Nazi on The Daily Show[/ame] Admittedly, this is an old clip from 1999. However, didn't Stewart did just go after fox pretty heavily using some 6 year old clips? Yes he did. This isn't the only example either. Stephen Colbert also joked with one of his guests about Bush and Republicans being like the Nazi party. At no point did Colbert stop him and say that was over the line. Of course not, it was 'no holds barred' when the target was Bush. There was also an episode of the Daily Show where Jon Stewart compared The boy Scouts to the Hitler Youth, although I'm having a hard time digging up the clip. When I do, you can be sure it will be posted on the site.
I think I saw the episode you're talking about, Stewart was just pointing out that FOX lady's hypocrisy not his own. He did a follow up to O'Reilly's response, proving that it was just about making FOX correspondants look hypocritical. I don't think he was saying that nazi analogies are beneath the Daily Show.
I don't see how you could take it any other way. Its been the focus of his attacks on Beck, Fox and the tea parties for years now. Not to mention his call for civility and "rally to restore sanity".
You're right there, I thought you were just responding to the recent episode where he went after FOX. Carry on.
Right, that's what his supporters say when Stewart says or does something they cant defend. Yet when he says something you agree with, suddenly he's speaking truth to power. I'd also point out that his attacks on the right are almost always repeated over and over on real news networks, so its a bit more than just harmless comedy.
Maybe to the idiots who watch his show and take it as gospel. I honestly don't even think I've watched a full episode of his show or the other guy. If I do watch TV, I try to make sure it is educational (is that even possible? LOL).
Then I would say that they are NOT "real news networks." I've come to the realization that unless I was there I really don't know what happened. There are three sides to every story: he said, she said, and what actually happened. I do not put any faith in our government or news media. They are both failures. Just use common sense to come to your own conclusions. What's the old saying...simplest explanation is usually the right one?
Yeah dude, that's exactly what I think! Thanks for putting those words down for me. Ah yes, if one is offended by a joke, it was obviously not just a joke.
What? Is comparing people you disagree with politically to the Nazis/Hitler wrong or not? If not, then Stewart is a blabbering hypocrite. He uses his "comedy", along with the media, to smear Republicans and the right. Its not about being offended, its about advancing (false) political narratives.
What don't you understand about comedy? The point of comedy is to see humour in events. You can't see humour in anything Drone.
I love comedy, but I wouldn't call these "jokes" all that funny. Even his audience responds negatively with boos and nervous chuckles. Lets not forget Stewart is crusading against this very thing and using it to call out his political opponents as hypocrites.
Drone thanks for posting this.. I have a flaming ultra liberal jon stewart can do no wrong in my circle.. I Can't Wait to show this off.
Its not just that either. There was another good example of Colbert partaking in the same type of behavior: Colbert Plays Along While Guest Compares Bush to Hitler | NewsBusters.org Remember the Bush years? Comparing him and the Republicans to the Nazis was pretty common and there was none of this hand wringing about it from these people. Remember this? Its a great example of the stark contrast in attitudes. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WQbNaXJ8Pw]YouTube - Susan Roesgen CNN: Bush as Hitler vs. Obama as Hitler[/ame] Keep in mind that I'm not excusing Fox or Republicans. They're all hypocrites too. Its just that they're the only ones who are ever called on it.
There's a difference between those comedians, Stewart and Colbert, and news people that do reports comparing Hitler to Obama or Bush. The comedians aren't called on it, because they are doing jokes.
Those "news people" don't claim to be "news people" though. They are on news networks, but their shows are for entertainment purposes. Just like the Daily Show.
