Flash drive question.

  1. I don't know much about computers other than basics, so please answer as if you were talking to a 7 or 75 year old.

My 4 year old Toshiba laptop is on deaths door. A few days ago the power light was on, the screen was dead. I got good deal on Amazon for a new Acer. Last I was messing with the Toshiba and it started up after I took out the battery and used only the power cord (I already did all this the day it died and nothing worked). I did the microsoft update and it restarted fine.

About what type and size flash drive should I get? If someone could just point me in the right direction to transfer about 800 pics of different sizes, I'd appreciate it alot.

    Thanks.

  2. 16gb should be more than enough. But it's probably cheaper in the long run to just by a 32gb or a 64! You'll use it for years to come.

    here's my reasoning:

The average 1000x1000 JPEG file size with normal compression is pretty low. Lets say... .70mb. (That's a REAL EXAGGERATION)

    So 1000 (photos) x .70 = 700mb.

So even if you have five 700mb movies you don't want to lose either, you're more than covered.

    :)

Honestly, backup all the shit you need

Wipe the OS, re install, and try and get another 2-3 years out of the machine

  3. Thanks.

Honestly, I was shocked it even booted up. I'm hoping it turns on and stays on long enough to transfer stuff to the flash. It has always run hot (even with a cooling fan/stand underneath), but now it's really hot. After it turned on, I put it on the edge of the table with a huge cyclone floor fan pointed at it.

"Wipe the OS, re install, and try and get another 2-3 years out of the machine"

If it doesn't start smoking and catch on fire , could I still use it as a desktop without doing the above?

  4. If the computer won't boot up, there's a few things you can do to recover data.

You can attempt to boot into a linux live CD

or you can physically remove the HDD, and use a cradle or cables to access the drive.

You can literally run that machine until it catches fire if you want. Just make sure you get all your shit off of it.

  5. I'm going to get a 16gb. I was hoping the Toshiba would last until the Holidays when sales are best. It's been an expensive month. I have a $10 Amazon code that I think is expiring so I'm leaning towards this Kingston over this Sansdisk.

    Thanks again.

  7. Walmart has cheap flash drives. I get an 8gb every time for 3-5 bucks.
