Flaccid sprouts, please help

  1. Hey, so I started a couple bag seeds, and it was going good, but im having sudden problems. I'll describe my methods so you have all the intel.

To germ the seeds I soak them in ph balanced water for 24 hours, then put them in a warm damp paper towel til the taproot pops.

At this point I set them up in a seed starter mini greenhouse thing (high, forgot what it's called), with a small reptile heat pad underneath, using light warrior as the medium.

For lighting, I don't have much. Two 175w blue reptile daytime basking bulbs, and a normal 75w house light, all within 10 inches of the clear lid. I used my hand to check the heat and it feels fine.

I've been lightly watering them daily (sometimes twice depending on how the medium looks) using a spray bottles filled with water from my aquarium (I have my tank set up with aquaponics in mind, ph balanced and no chemicals harmful to my plants).

My plants grow tall and fast, about 1 1/2-2" before they start sprouting their first set of real leaves.

About 3 days after they sprout, the stem becomes completely flaccid, and the plant slowly dies. What am I doing wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  3. Damping off - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Easy fix- nuke your soil before you put a seed in it! Get it hot and steamy in the microwave to kill the damping off spores. Let it cool completely, then plant!

A small fan to keep the air from getting stagnant around your plants also helps!

  5. Put some Viagra in the water :ey:

But for real a small fan is your best bet. Your seedlings are stretching for light and eventually becoming to top heavy to stand.

  6. Awsome! Thanks granny, I'll give it ashot!

  7. So I spent about an hour in Walmart trying to find a small fan, only to discover that fans are seasonal at Walmart. Go figure. So instead I'm using an aquarium air pump to create the air flow.

Also started a new seed in nuked light warrior.

Got a 18" fluorescent light as well, I'm told one can never have too many lights (as long as the temp stays ok, obviously).

    Hoping for improvement.

  8. I've nuked the soil, and added air flow, new sprouts are still going flaccid and dying. Very confused.
I'm also having quite a bit of difficulty figuring out the distance for the lights. I've read that they need to be as close as possible, as long as its not too hot for the plant, so I keep the light around 8-10" from the top. The problem I have is that I feel like this is too high, and causing my plant to stretch, but when I move it any closer, my plant shrivels and dries out over night.

I thought I had a good idea what I was doing, but I've yet to make it 2 weeks into a grow. Furthest I've gotten is my second set of leaves.

    Help a newb?

  10. They usually die when they contract that particular type of root rot. Plant new seeds!!!!

  11. I have started germing a bunch of bag seed a dew days ago, 6 have tap rots popping, just waiting for them to get a bit bigger before I plant em.
I'll post pix when they sprout, seem to be goin pretty slow.
