First Time Grower

  1. Hello GrassCity Community!
    This is my first post.

This is my first batch that I am growing. I have a REALLY NICE set up put together. Thank you "Grow Great Marijuana" by Logan Edwards. This is my Trial and Error run and I have come across some problems.

    1) My babies are 11 days old and are about 4 inches tall. Some of them are laying down. I am worried. Is it too early to use steaks? the second pair of real leaves are sprouting and they are looking very healthy but they aren't thick enough to hold themselves up. When i planted them into the soil from a humidity dome the longer ones were kinda on there side or leaning over and i would just put some extra soil at the base of the stem to stand them straight but they are just leaning over. Will this problem go away soon? What are some things I can do to promote stem strength?

Let me know if you want more details. I will be reporting any problems I come across.
Also what are some opinions for watering regimens?

    Thank you,
    BigBuddahChz

  2. Kinda sounds like their stretching and falling over from their own wieght at the top. Some pics would help. When I transplant seedlings I transplant them in soil right upto where the little round starter leaves are.

  3. Yeah .. seems you have let them sprout without enough light - I did the same in my first herbal grow LOL

I used 'pea sticks' cut to about 6" and GENTLY tied the plants to the sticks with soft string.

Be careful not to damage the roots when you put the sticks in but do it real soon. I re-potted them after about 4 weeks when the stems were strong enough.
Don't worry they will recover just don't damage them.

By the way about stem strength. Having a fan is useful for this as the plants strengthen in response to the breeze. Don't use one on yours yet though - wait till they thicken up.

    :smoke:

  4. Pics are attached. I don't really know how to put pictures directly on this message...

Thanks for the help. and quick too.

  5. Problem number two.

it gets cold at night. My thermometer will show that over night the minimum would be around 65 degrees. I have the light on 17/6 light cycle. Turns on at 3 am and off at 8 pm. idk wether i should have my plants on 24/7 of light. I'm using a 400 watt HPS light. the pots are about 8 inches off the cement ground.

    All Suggestions Welcome.
    Thanks

  6. Looks like they stretched b4 you put the light on them. Your pots are too full to add enough soil to help so stakring them is probably your best option. How long as it been since you transplanted and put them under the light?

  7. S-----T-----R-----E-----T-----C-----H-----E-----D

Your plants are starved for light.

  8. why do people insist on growing without efficiently researching and planning? This I will never understand. This is a simple diagnostic problem....

  9. Carefully replant them just a tad below the little round starter leaves. The stalk that is planted below the soil will slowly start to grow roots out of it. I use either my T5 light set up or CFL`s for seedlings, less heat and you can have the light(s) alot closer to the plants reducing stretching. As for 65 at night I would try to raise the temps to atleast 70 degrees for seedling. In my grow room I have a small digital tower heater set at 72.

Its how i learn. Trial and error bro Trial and error.
They dont mention everything in the books. You gotta learn somehow.
    I appreciate the post tho.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

  11. It has been about 4 or 5 days. I had a florescent for when they were starting in a humidity dome and I should have had the light fixture closer. But that is when they started stretching.

Do you believe that i can still safely replant them deeper in the pot???

  12. I understand your methods man, It's just that at this you're already messing up in early seedling stages, at this rate imagine at mid vegetative stage, How much trial do you have to do for you to understand the real error was starting without being fully aware of what you are getting in to. But I still wish you best of luck man, I hope you succeed, I subbed to keep a watchful eye.

  13. Understood. I appreciate it man.

I will be constantly posting updates of these guys. Please come back and check on me every once in a while.

  14. Yeah I think they can be safely replanted. Just have to be really carefull doing it. I replant about 4 times, starting out in little pots when seadlings then working my way upto the last pot to finish up in. Pick up some Superthrive, you can use as little as a few drops to 1 milileter to a gallon of water when watering after transplanting.

  15. Giving your plants light is mentioned though...

  16. Diagnosis: Stretching in very early stages of life. Stretching occurred from lack of light. I believe there was two factors.

    1) the florescent I was using wasn't strong enough.
    2) the florescent was hanging about 6 inches above the humidity dome when I should have had it less than an inch directly above the dome.

I used 6 inch dowel rods, very gently secured the plants with soft rope and added soil.

This is how they are looking now.

    Thank you for the help!!

  17. That may work for the short term but if they were my plants I would deffintely replant them upto the little round leaves. The stem that is replanted under the soil will not only grow roots out of it but will become part of the tap root which is the plants main root that all other roots grow off of and branch out from making the plant`s main stalk more sturdy.

  18. No I don't agree, I think they are too tender to replant at this stage.

I thought the dowel rods were a bit overboard but it will work lol...

UPDATE: This is week 3. 1 isn't looking so good but the rest are flourishing beyond my expectations. Hopefully in a week I can take out the dowel rods and they can continue on there own.

    How do they look??

  20. Maybe but sooner or later he will be better off transplanting them down farther into the soil if not their gonna continue having trouble supporting their own wieght as they get bigger and heavier.
