First time grow (spacebucket)...seedling Q

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by ek268, Jul 5, 2017.

  1. Hey I'm new to growing and have recently started a grow in a spacebucket, planted seed (northern lights feminised autoflower) directly into the spacebucket (in soil and perilite).I currently have a seedling which sprouted and developed the first leaves yesterday after about 60 hours or so. Today she has begun growing her first proper leaves...so far so good. However I've noticed as she's grown more today there is something on the side of the stem at the top... its hard to get a decent picture but here it is here...the picture is taken at an angle, the stem is growing straight. Any ideas what it could be and if I should/could fix it?

    thanks ☺

  2. Looks like a piece of the seed casing.

  3. I agree. Spray it with water to soften it and use a toothpick to carefully remove it.

  4. Yea, part of the seed covering. It'll eventually push it off. No biggie. Be careful to not over water. That's a big old bucket of soil you're growing that tiny seedling in and it's gonna take some amount of time to build a root system and actually do much in the way of growing. Needs heat right now moreso than light and you need to stay away from it and leave it alone. Never water one until you can lift the container it's in and feel NO weight. They don't like roots sitting in wet soil constantly and it's important to give them solid wet/dry cycles to keep them healthy. It won't need fed for several weeks either. If the soil you're using is of any quality at all, it can and will easily feed your plant for awhile. Just leave it alone and let it do it's thing and resist the urge to mess with it constantly. It will take it many days before you start to see any real growth or that it will need anything from you other than a peek. Good luck. TWW

  5. Ok I had considered seed casing and ruled it out (I'm a total newbie) so that is mega helpful everyone.

I see a difference in opinion on what should be done with the seed casing (some think take it off and other leave it be). I'm gonna go with the leave it be option at present as I don't feel it's impeding on it in anyway...should it come off on it's own in that case? Is there anything I should look out for to show it is bothering it?

Widow white, trying to leave it be as much as possible as you say. I have been misting the top soil when dry and haven't actually done a proper watering since flushing the soil before the seed went in...wonder if I could pick your brains a bit actually in this regard. The room is really warm and between this the light and the fan...the tòp soil seems to dry out several times a day and needs misted...is this ok? Should I be leaving it more....it definitely is dry for periods between mistings but I do feel I am misting more than expected. Also when should I think about properly watering it (until run off)...I haven't felt comfortable doing that yet but dunni if it maybe needs it if its drying out so often.

    It's a tricky hobby eh?

Thanks for all your replies, it's much appreciated!

I used a smaller cup and watered around my seedlings. I used the first knuckle method to test the soil. Listen to widow white. You don't want to over water them. If you haven't yet get yourself a ph kit and a decent thermometer to keep an eye on your humidity and temp.Start lifting the pots now so you get a feel of when it's time to water. I'm only a couple weeks ahead of you on my first ever grow. You start learning how to read the plants. The hardest part for me is just leaving them the f*ck alone and let them do their thing lol.

Just took this pic now. Day 16. Notice the middle back plant is smaller than the others. I over watered that one because it was closest to the fan I have in my tent so the top soil dried up very quickly and my natural response was to give it more water not realizing that I was only suffocating the roots with too much h20. As long as you stay on top of your plants and pay attention to what they "tell" you you'll be fine.I did almost all my research on this forum before I started and learned it's more of a preference on how you grow rather than a formality. Good luck man. Looking good so far

Thanks a lot! The autoflower seeds I'm using are meant to flower in a few weeks time but at the moment I can't see that myself.

Are you fully watering now at day 16? We are still just misting the top soil at present as I'm conscious of the over watering...but that top soil is getting pretty dry at times however think I'll hold back again today as there is definitely moisture further down so don't wanna remedy a problem that isn't there and i turn cause one . I don't have a PH kit or thermometer yet but will look into this now, thanks for that.

yeah it's a total minefield of info everywhere but realising the same as you outwith massive disasters there's a million and one ways to go about this.

Hopefully you're right and I'll start getting a feel for the plant. Do you have a thread on the go for yours I could follow?

    thanks again!

  8. First grow. (Auto flower)

I'm gonna start updating it now since they're starting to show noticeable growth

    AcuRite 00613 Indoor Humidity Monitor

House & Garden HGRXL001 Roots Excelurator Fertilizer, 100 mL

My buddy who grows showed me this stuff. It's a little pricey but hee swears by it and I quickly found out why.

General Hydroponics GH1514 General Hydroponics Ph Control Kit

Idk what your budget is but Amazon is the shit. They have everything you'll need and cheaper than anything I've seen at any stores. What kind of lights you running and do you have a fan blowing on it?

  10. Nice will follow along.

will have a look at these things thanks a lot. We have a low budget unfortunately trying to do everything on the cheap which isn't ideal but it us what it is...using a UFO light (viper spector) but thinking of adding more light later depending on how we go. No fan blowing on it at present I have fans on my lights going in and a pc fan on the side coming out. I am thinking about using LST and/or scrog when things progress. Hoping to train it and keep it low to work with the bucket and space we have but looking into this more at present. Guess will need to wait and see if she goes that far!

    cheers for the info!

Thinking the same. Also You're gonna want a fan blowing on it soon, for air exchange and it helps strengthen up the stem

  14. GFP my pic is on the first post without LEDs on it's the one that shows the wee bit attached to the stem. Will add another though.

I'm not too stressed about air flow at the moment there are 3 fans on the light getting plenty air in and another fan taking it out. There seems to be a noticeable movement of air through the plant. But aye thinking about adding another fan in to blow on her for strength. Quick q surrounding that if you know...would a pc fan be strong enough for this? Also...is it totally necessery would you say? I am trying not to lose too much light which another fan on the side of the bucket would do. Is there other methods that can strengthen the stem as well or is this something I will have to work with?

I've went down the spacebucket route due to cost and space issues so am expecting a lower yield than your average but would obviously like to optimise where I can.

thanks guys for the input, much appreciated. Have attached another pic on finding it hard to get great pics with the set up but let me know your thoughts etc.

  15. Just a wee update figured I might as well.

Still seems to be growing quite well...still haven't watered properly yet gonna try hold off a bit as there seems to be moisture still down the bottom and I don't want to cause any mould etc by going in too soon...Think I will do a proper watering tomorrow or maybe Sunday. See how we fair.
