First time grow - Bucknasty

Discussion in 'Indoor Grow Journals' started by bucknasty_og, Apr 2, 2016.

  1. Hey guys. I've posted here or there about my first time grow, so I thought I would compile everything that has happened so far into a journal and simply update this from now on. I'll start from the beginning.

I started a bunch of Casey Jones seeds out in a shitty grow box with an LED grow light, all in SOLO cups. This story begins a few days before March 11th, when I decided to seriously attempt to grow.

    My setup-
    4x4x7 grow tent
1000W super HPS hortilux bulb w/ ballast
6in fan taking in air, cooling through the light and out to exhaust
    1g humidifer
Happy Frog soil (after transplanted) into 5 gallon smart pots
    Rotating fan

I started with 6 little ones after transplanting and choosing the healthiest looking candidates.

  2. One week update. I bent the girls and started some LST. They grew quite a bit. Just using water for now and letting the soil do its thing. No nutrients yet.

  3. One week update, March 24th now, and MAN are they looking happy! However, it's important to note that I began their Cyco Grow A+B nutrient cycle a few days ago. Little did I know I was fucking up big time.

I began noticing significant leaf damage around this time. A few small discolorations but mainly losing tips and parts of the sides of leaves. Although there were no visible pests or insects, I assumed this was the problem and tried to do some troubleshooting.

  5. I had been using a simple organic insecticide, misting once daily, with no results. The leaf problem seemed to be getting worse, even with some more discoloration showing up. I purchased a heavier duty insecticide, Azamax, and applied thoroughly. Didn't really see any results over the next few days.

  6. Fast forward to 2 days ago. I couldn't for the damn life of me figure out this hellacious insect problem. I mean, there were NO signs of bugs. No gnats, nothing on the leaves. The damage was symmetrical and didn't look random like a bug infestation. Even the underside of the leaves were spotless and clean. I noticed also that the tips of my leaves were starting to just slightly turn color, which pointed again to my hunch that this may be a nutrient problem. So, I thought that maybe my problem wasn't insect related at all. Time to break out my PH kit.

Update: today. I think I have good news.

After checking the pH of my nutrient/water reservoir, to my absolute horror, the pH was sitting at almost 9. The test liquid was green, if you know what I'm talking about. I couldn't believe it, was THIS my problem? So, I filled the reservoir up with clean water, to dilute the nutrient solution further. Then I spent a bit getting the pH of the new mix just right, and devised an experiment. I would take a picture of my droopiest plant, water it, and then take another picture a few hours later so see if any recovery was being made. I think, as of now, they are staring to feel a bit better, which is making me think it may have been a horrible pH problem from the beginning. First time grower....big oversight on my part.

Pics before watering, 2 hours after watering, and 5 hours after water.

  15. Buck, those are looking sweet.

  16. Thanks guys, some crazy shit has been going down the past couple of days. I took in a new plant! And also, I have new damage showing up on mine :(

  17. I was wondering if anyone could help me troubleshoot this damage to my leaves? It's only showing up on the bottom leaves for now, but I'm afraid whatever it is will work its way up through the plant. I'm not sure about this one guys. Any ideas?

  18. So I inherited this plant yesterday. A friend of mine had been growing it under very poor conditions and was about to give up on it, so I offered to take it in and see if I could revitalize it. There were coffee grinds mixed in with the soil, dunno why, and the plant was COVERED in cinnamon. The previous grower apparently thought this would help with pests or something. Not sure about the coffee. It's a female clone of the Sage N Sour sativa strain, just gonna see if I can breathe some life into her. Re-potted in a fresh 5gal smart pot with fresh happy frog soil and watered with a mild nutrient mix. We'll see.
