My first ever grow, outdoor organic sativa dominant strains. The buds are light and airy. My confusion is that all the guides I read say 60% humidity range in the jar is where you want to be. I jarred some up 4 days ago. Put a hygrometer in a few to test rH and was reading in the 80-90 range. One would think that I harvested too early but these dried for 7 days at 60-70 degrees during day temps, humidity around 70. The stems kinda popped but did not crack or break. Currently 4 days in the buds feel dry in the exterior so I don't know what to do. Some guide suggested to remove the buds from the jars for 24-36 hours if rH is higher than 70 which my jars are by far. But I don't want to overdry them either and they don't seem wet so to speak at all. Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
There's a significant risk for mold when they're sitting in jars at that level of humidity, if it's not already a problem. I suggest you open them every day and try to circulate in some new air, maybe a couple times per day, until they hold a steady 60% (or 62%). I also recommend you buy some 62% Boveda packs to help keep them where you want them. They're better for hydrating than they are for dehydrating.
Thank you for your input, yes my understanding with the boveda packs that they are meant more to maintain the cure when they are done and ready for storage. Not for the actual dehydration/curing process. I will take them out and air-dry them another day then see where the rH is hitting. It just boggles me because it seems like there is very little moisture in the buds Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
How long did you dry the buds before you put them the jars to cure? Sent from my XT1585 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
As stated in the post. 7 days at 60-70 degrees at around 60-65% rH Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
Sorry, spaced that! I definitely try to keep the rule of having the stem snap before I place in jars. However, last year I had the same problem. The RH kept climbing after being in the jars so I had to burp them like three times a day. I would even take all of the bud out in the morning and leave it out for up to a couple hours. After a week or so the RH came down. This didn't happen to me the previous year so I looked back through my notes and realized I dried my buds the year before for 10 days and not 7. Same strain. I was reminded recently that even though the stem my snap their is still plenty of moisture in those buds. I'm going to try the Cure Tube this year to see if that helps!
Put the buds into paper grocery bags for a few days. This slows the drying down some rather than being exposed to wide open air. Just give the bag a gentle shake to stir things up each day. If there’s a lot, you can mix in strips of newspaper to help absorb moisture
Well I let them sit out in open air for the past 20 hours or so. I'm gong to put them back in jars soon and then wait a day to see where the rH ends up. If it's still too high I may use the paper bag method, as that seems like a less drastic measure, hopefully that will prevent the outsides of the buds from getting to crispy. Thanks @Soil2Coco @GreenMtnWookie for your feedback!
So after leaving them in open air for 20+hours I jarred them back up about 10 hours ago and the hygrometer is still reading 80% Something doesn't seem right Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
What are you using for a hygrometer? What is the RH in the spot you are dying? I put my buds in a small cardboard box and back into the drying tent. 12 hours later all good. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Some pocket size hygrometer off Amazon. I did calibrate it though. RH in dry area has been 60-70 mostly Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
I would think dying in 50'ish humidity would be better. Have a dehumidifier? I bought 4 of the caliber iv.... did not calibrate... packing directions said I didn't have to... Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
I have a dehumidifier running already. Ambient humidity has been super high but past few days it dropped into better range. Caliber 4 is what I have also Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
They are down to 71% in jars so I'm leaving tops off for 8hours today which hopefully will drop me into the 60s range then I can just burp frequently and I should be good. Sent from my LG-LS998 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
I use boost packs for steady humidity - I keep mine at 55% - and use vacuum containers to store Sent from my V813s Core4 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
I have three meters all read different in the same room so I use them to get what I call an average Sent from my V813s Core4 using Grasscity Forum mobile app
