First noob grow

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by alienscience, Sep 12, 2007.

  1. Well, this is my first ever (semi successful) grow to date. I know the set up is completely rudimentary but I hope to change that if these things take off. Right now they've been growing for about 6 or seven days. Only about 4 or 5 in pure soil. And I've got some pictures of the two that have come the farthest. I'm keeping them indoors for now, and probably will have too because of the upcoming winter. Every day I put them in sunlight on my windowsill with the window open and water them about twice a day. At night, I put them in my closet with the fan on and temperature under control. So far so good? Or is it taking a bad turn already?

I'm not trying to get the most dank possible stuff yielding by the 2-3 ounces. Really, just trying to get something for me and my friends to chill with and maybe pick up a hobby. Any suggestions so far? Thanks in advance for your help.

  2. first of all, when you want advice from GC about your pictures it is best not to link to another forum to which you must register for to see the pictures. you'll get a lot better advice if you just post it here.

that said, i would say your plant looks healthy for the moment. you will need to transplant it to a bigger pot soon otherwise it'll just die. second, my guess is that just putting it on the windowsill during the day won't give it enough light unless it is getting DIRECT sunlight. this late in the summer, the days are getting short enough that the plant won't be getting light for long enough for initial growth. you're going to need to give it other light to ensure it gets 18 hrs of light. then when you decide to flower, you'll need to be diligent about giving it 12hrs of light and 12 hrs of dark. although not impossible, weed is not typically a plant that can just grow on your windowsill. it typically takes more diligent care than that, even if you're not looking to yield huge. maybe someone else knows better than i, but i too tried what you're doing when idid my first grow and they all just died in the first week or two.

  3. You also need to cut back on watering a LOT. Weed likes to be thirsty before it's next watering (as this allows the roots to expand and grow), so I like to water every 4-5 days when the plant is young. Ideally, you can check the soil and feel how wet, or dry, it is. I use clear pots so I can see when the pot is becoming dried up and I need to rewater. This also gives me the benefit of seeing when my plants are near time to transplant, and not yet rootbound.

  4. Ok, update so far. Unfortunately, I lost two of my best sprouts in the past few days. And they were both because of idiot moves. I just transplanted the rest last night into bigger pots that aren't see through. Also, I got a light I think might be ideal for growing. Only thing is, I have two. Pix of them are below, I was kind of hoping you guys could tell me which one would do me good. As for the plants, they've been through a lot lately, and just seemed to have stop growing. Hoping for the best though. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and got the pictures linked now, so were good.

  5. Well, heres an update on my project. Since the last one, I've gone through two lights that did absolutely nothing for my plants which means they stayed about an inch high for two weeks straight. Just recently, I said fuck it and went out and bought some CFLs. Its been amazing what I've seen in just a few days. I'm down to three now, but they all look healthy and can see progress almost hourly. Let me know what you guys think so far, any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Just so you know, incandescent bulbs are worthless for growing, but I guess you already figured that out.

Get some Y-splitters for your bulbs. Three is ideal. That way you can split the socket once and then two more times so you can use 4 CFLs in one socket. Keep the lights about two inches away from your plants and have a fan blowing over them.

  7. by 100 Watt, are these cfls 100 watt equivalent? if that's the case, they are really only 23-27 watt bulbs that put out the equivalent amount of light as a 100W incandescent.

Lumens or LUX is what is important. From what I've read, the minimum amount of light for growing is 2,500 lumens per square foot. A 100 W equivalent cfl puts out around 1600 lumens (give or take).

  8. Ok everybody. Im back again with some new news. Since my last update, I've invested in a grow box. Its still very much a WIP but I like to think its taking shape. I know already that I'm going to have to expand it once the plants get bigger and that only one light will by no means be enough for all those plants. But my plan is to wait till the box is too small to make it bigger and probably only keep one plant and put more lights in there. I'm still at three serious plants only. Pictures are below. And if you notice my light fixture, I know its only one. I went to both home depot and walmart to see if they had a Y-splitter and...they didn't. So I'm still looking for that. Also I have a small 6" fan outside of the box blowing air in. Thanks in advance for the help. More to come.

PS. Anyone have any ideas about 'Expert Gardiner's All purpose plant food? I have some and was wondering when I should start adding nutes. Thanks

  9. Uh oh. I was just looking at my plants and started to notice these white blotches on them. Some are in spots and some are like blobs of it. I really have no idea what it could be, and to be honest I'm not so sure I want to know. But if its serious, anyone mind helping me out with it?

The first two are of the leave problem. The third is the node. I was wondering if its too early to tell sex yet and took a picture to see if anyone could tell. The last is just of all three plants so far.

  10. I think that is a sign of a PH problem. It's either to high or to low, sorry i can't help much.

  11. Yay, update time =)

Ok, well I played photographer tonight and tried to get the best and the most pictures I could of my plants. The white blob problem seems to have gone away on plant #1, but on plant #3 it seems to have gotten worse. Today I didn't water them, so maybe that had some type of effect. As for the size, well I have pretty big hands, but I'm sure you can get somewhat of the jist. Also, as of right now Im preparing on expanding the box and transplanting plant #1 to a bigger pot. Not to mention praying to the all mighty herb gods that it is female. If not, I don't know what I'm going to do, because the other two seemed to have halted growth. :(

As for the sex, I figured it was too early to tell yet. But I still snagged a few pictures of plant #1 anyways seeing as how its the most developed. And man, the smell of these plants is nice. Its like fresh green weed, and only being able to smell musty bag weed till now. I love it. Sadly though, I had to put an air freshener in the room so to keep it more secretive.

As for the setup, I plan on getting more lights this weekend and narrowing it down to only one plant when I get the sexes all figured out. Oh, and is there anything I should be doing to make the plant show sex? Or will it eventually just grow its parts in the vegetative state?

As for the pictures, the first two are of my box, the next three are of plant #1, and the remaining are of plant #2

  12. Oh, can't forget about plant #3

  13. \t\t \t\t \t\t \t\tOk, so first off. Sorry to everyone on the delayed reaction. Just been a little busy lately. Anyways, on to the plants. Since my last drop in, I've made the box bigger, transplanted plant #1, and got rid of one of my little sprouts. During the transplant of Plant #1, I accidently damaged about half of the roots, which I know isn't good, but since then the plant's been doing well. Flourishing I'd guess you could say =)

Now for my questions. First off (yes I have read and searched and searched and watched and searched and even ASKED before) but I was wondering when the plants should start showing sex. Do I need to introduce the 12/12 light cycle for this to occur? And also, I've been planning on keeping only one plant, seeing as I only have room for one.
As always, any comments or feedback is unbelievably appreciated[IMG]

EDIT: Whoops, I forgot to mention that plant #1 was damaged pretty bad too when something fell on it. The stems still good, just a few tears and rips in a couple leaves. Seems to be recovering though.

  14. Hi there alienscience,

Enjoyed reading all of your posts thanks.

    1. You have 3 plants now right?

    2. Make a bigger grow room (small cupboard 2/4ft in height) this will give the 3 plants abit more room to play with = (GROWTH).

ADVICE IS ALWAYS GOOD TO LISTEN TO! SO REMEMBER THAT:D

    3. What is the light/lights your using atm?, I'd go for (3way fitting with 3cfls attached to it then make sure the plants are 2/4inches below the light).

    4. Whats the watering situtration? how many times you watering it?

    5. You using any fert atm?

    6. How old are the 3 plants?

    7. How long in veg are you? plus whats the light cycle etc hrs on/off? (18/6 is for veg 12/12 is for flowering;))

Please dont use tin foil, it has the effect of buring holes on your plant/plants, thoses yellow bits on your leaves could be the start of it, plus dont spray the plant/plants with water as it always makes the leaves have some sort of burning look to it (yellow, greyish).

  15. cool keep it updated
