  1. I didn't know where to post this but here we go. So I'm going to be getting my fist car around the beginning of October and I've been really interested in the VW TDI http://m.vw.com/hi/jetta/trims/tdi/basics/ its my first car and the 30mpg city and 42mpg highway really has my attention. I want a car that has good mileage and wont have a lot of engine problems and stuff like that. Does anyone think this is a good pick, any pros and cons would also be appreciated. Thanks grasscity :)

  2. I'm not a gear head but I do know anything VW or Honda is a good pick.

  3. Vw all the way. Any specific info on year and model? And TDI can come in a Touareg, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Beetle and the Eos. All great cars. Ive got an 86 jetta with near a 500k on the clock and I would trust it going from L.A. to New York. Solid cars. Just maintain it well and itll last a lifetime easy.

  4. Oh just saw your link...sorry. Great choice. MK6 Jetta. You really cant go wrong. Brand new take it easy for about 1k miles , use proper oil (mobile 1 or vw recommended oil) and road trips and long distance driving is great for these motors.

  6. Not as reliable as it's japanese competitors, though, good driving habits and maintenance should make it last. Why spend that much money on a compact though? If you want fuel efficient, reliable ride worth about 25 grand, get a Camry hybrid. More room and more practical.

  7. Sweet thanks for the advice, looks like this is my best choice judging on your comment and other I have read online jettas seem to hold up and its not a bad looking car in my opinion

  8. 2006 Passat I had was the biggest POS I've ever owned. I got it with 29k miles did all the maintance still costs me 9k total in repairs over 3 and a half years. Something was always breaking on it. It was a 2.0 turbo gas not TDI but put me off all late model VWs forever.

  9. But it looks "good"!

  10. My whole family drives/works on vws and we have plenty of experience haha. When your buying a used car, it doesnt really matter what you get, it matters how it was previously owned...i could buy a honda, drive the piss put of it and kill it before 5k miles. And i could buy a usually unreliably old lancia that was properly maintained and it would be fine. Kinda irrelevant. Hondas are reliable but if you care about what you drive at all, its not the choice. As with a camry. They just are not fun, or thought worthy. If it truly makes no differemce what you drive then yeah those are "sensible".

Feel free to scroll down and see where volkswagen sits relatively to every other manufacturer. And op wanted efficieny and reliability, not driving around for fun. And he's getting a new car. But feel free to overlook all of this and dickride german manufacturers. You're all the same.

  12. Damn thanks for the info, my mom was thinking about getting a Passat.

  13. Anyone have a preference between stick or automatic tranny?

  14. both. my preference is better than yours, that's why you want to know right? get both. don't even drive the car to see for yourself.

  15. I referenced used cars to show that the person who mentioned his old passat was irrelevant. I know hes getting a new car. Do you have experience here debbie downer? Or are you basing this off internet info? I really do know about this stuff..its my thing. Its half my life. VW and audi are number one. World car of the year belongs to vw, and the record for most miles on a single tank, 1600 miles in a new passat tdi. It averaged 84 mpg. And irelevant but they hold the record for most towing weight, a factory touareg pulled a 340,000lb 747. And as far as reliability, you can only go from personal experience and my old jetta, 26 years old with almost a half a million miles and it drives everywhere just fine. I can put up pics if needed. As well as the rest of my familys vws, and the multiple friends i have, all will surely vouch for theres and wont think about owning another car. Working at multiple mechanics shops, you get to see what cars roll in the most for which maintence and vw along with audi are by far the rarest. No mechanic likes to work on them because you have to do everything right which is good. American cars are worst. Toyotas are reliable but horrible to drive. if your spending that much money on something it should make you happy. A vw being funner to own and more pleasant to drive makes it worth more than the others. They are also well known to be the most underrated cars from the factory. In the real car world at least. Idk about the internet. Theres a big reason people who like vws, really love them. Its more than just a car, and anything over 10k better make you smile.

  16. Stick is more efficiant and reliable. Auto is easier.

  17. Sounds like you really know your stuff and holy crap 84mpg!!! I might just have to take a look at some Passats, shit I just gotta take a trip to the VW dealership soon. So far I've only had a chance to look a dodges but I'm not really interested in those anymore, VW sounds like the way to go, thanks for all of your helpful info :) I'm thinking about going stick because it's just something I need to learn and idk if this is exactly true but I though I heard that sticks have a little more "get up and go" over automatics. Even if it's not true I'm looking more toward a stick shift because of what you said about them being more reliable plus (I might be wrong again) might help shave a little bit off the cost.

  18.
I'm not bashing them, though, I know bias when I see it. Especially when it comes to people who own german cars. They have this grandeur sense of pride in it; they actually believe their cars outclasses every other brand in every possible way without even considering the statistics.  And the same could be said about any car manufacturer. I take personal experience with a grain of salt.

I've been in a passat, jetta, and beetle. All of them had a stiff and bumpy ride. This is probably because they are more "fun" oriented rather than smooth. But who's to say that "fun" is better than "smooth". It's not like you're even allowed to take corner at 50mph in a 20mph zone anyways.

  19. The golf bluemotion diesel is rated at 88mpg..fantastic. passats are nicer than Jettas, especially new passats. And a stick is gaurenteed to be cheaper and faster than an automatic. And you can drive far more efficiant with a stick than an auto.
