First Hydroponic Grow, CFL help?

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by PhatCones, Jul 27, 2011.

  1. Ok so I just returned from a walk to the hardware store called 'Bunnings'. I asked speak to the lighting specialist and I asked him to show me where the Compact Fluorescent bulbs are. I asked him would this be suitable for growing lettuce, he told me alot of bullshit saying these will not grow anything even if I buy about 5 of them... He confused me allot so I didn't purchase any bulbs what so ever,

Now I'm puzzled and don't know exactly what bulbs to get.

I'm only growing 1 or 2 plants in a Micro Grow box I've made for Veg.

If anyone can tell me Exactly what I should be looking for when I return to the shop?
I saw allot of different CFL's like, Flood lights, Warm white. Lots of different sizes and WATT usage.

    Confused, please help GC!

  2. Hey bud, i get my bulbs from bunnings too. What you are generally looking for is the 48w 2700k/6500 (or the closest to these values i think my store had 3000k and 6000k or something) which is the highest wattage available in cfls they have, The bulbs are about $17 each. You will probably want 3-4 of these per plant, and they are BIG bulbs, they wont fit in normal lamps cause of the massive bases, so you might want to pickup some of their lamp bases which are about $5 each and incredibly easy to wire. I've added a picture of this bulb compared to a regular one so you can see how big it is.[IMG]
