first grow questions

  1. I'm about to start my first grow (nothing special, just some bagseed to make sure I have the process down before I waste too much money) and I've got a few quick questions about my grow space.

I'm going to be growing two plants in a closet which is approximately 3'x2' and about 5' tall (though if I need to I have room to raise a light source above five feet, I can't grow any higher because of a half shelf thing).

I've already got three seeds germinated (put them in soil tonight), but I don't have a proper lighting set up just yet.
I was going to order a 250 watt HPS light, but I'm afraid this may get too hot (both for the plants and as a fire hazard in such a small place).
Basically, I'm looking either for someone to alleviate my fears about heat or point me in the direction of an alternative (CFLs? I have no idea how many or what kind or what I need to mount them).

Beyond that, any general suggestions based on what I've given would be helpful. Thanks

  2. I use a very similar sized space (slightly taller though) for flowering, with a 600w HPS bulb.

Heat was a major issue for me. I had to cut a 4" intake vent in the external wall, and a 4" exhaust into the roofspace/attic with an inline duct fan to clear the heat. A PC case fan on the intake helped too, but I still see temps heading for 30 deg C on really hot days.

If you can leave the closet door open, with a fan in there to dissipate some heat, I reckon you'll not suffer too badly from high ambient temps. If it's a door closed stealth grow, you're definitely going to need some ventilation in there.

With 5 feet of height to play with, you shouldn't have any worries about burning the leaves. Keep the light 18" or so from the plant and it'll be fine.

If the light is wired and positioned properly, it shouldn't pose too much of a fire risk.

Consider flouros if you're worried about cutting holes. I veg under 200w 'eco-lite' bulbs in a smaller space with passive ventilation (no in/ex fans). The bulb is 2-3" from top of plants, and temps range between 22 - 26 deg C. Plants looking better than a friends plants which are under a 400w MH lamp.

  3. I live in an apartment so I can't cut any holes. I do live by myself though, so it doesn't need to be a strictly stealth grow (just enough so that the cops don't catch me, y'know?).

So you think if I left the door open a little bit and maybe put a little fan in there I'd be good?

  4. Remove the door and build a makeshift one out of a blanket/fans? heh.

  5. Or..forget the closet and get a couple sheets of plywood and build a portable growbox with ventilation holes?

  6. obviously you havent seen my apartment, theres definitely no room for that. its either the closet or nothing at all.

  7. my apartment is way too small for that. i'm afraid it's the closet or nothing at all.

  8. I hate to say this friend but you should try growing outdoors somewhere (in early spring). There are too many factors (problems) to consider, overheating, ventilation, odor, space etc...not to mention the flowering stage, it must be "light tight" with proper ventilation. Remember, these plants are alive, they need everything that you do; good food, sunshine, fresh air and a warm bed. Life's a bitch sometimes.

    Good luck, keep smokin.
