First Grow (Outdoor) - Suggestions?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Berlette, Feb 13, 2007.

  1. Doing my first outdoor grow tomorrow :)

My seeds (~15) are nearly done germinating, about 10-12 of them are showing taproots as of now. I'm currently using some standard gardening soil... No MG, I heard it can destroy the plants. Today I went out to my planting area (Not very well covered, but good enough) and tilled some dirt and added the soil. I also put 1 cup of hydrated lime. My grow space is ~1sq. yard.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or tips? I live in Southern California, so the last frost was a while back, will I be okay planting? I don't know what type of strain this is at all. My friend gave me a huge haul on Friday, and I found about 20 seeds in there. Basically, I have no idea how tall this will grow, when to harvest (or even HOW to harvest :p), or the yield it will have.

    Thanks!

  2. Harvesting is simple, u just cut the plant at the bottom of the stalk and u can either cut the branches off and hang them upside down or just hang the whole plant upside down, before you hang it you should trim off all the leaves but if u wanna dry and smoke em u can do that later but it would be harder to manucure probably.

after you hang and dry em u wanna give em their taste and stink back right? what you do is cure them, what u want is for them to saturate in they're own stink so u want them in something small and air tight, mason jars work best, tupaware or w/e its called workes too, u cure for about a week and a half, then ur weed is done.

  3. doesn't seem like a bery large space for 10-12 plants but i donno half will prob turn male

  4. Well I just looked today, and only about half of the 10 are actually good-looking. The other seeds look funky and some are cracked. I just planted 5 of them, hopefully 2 or 3 will come out normal :)

    Thanks for the help, ithofbubbles!

  5. By the way, how long should I let the branches / whole plant hang?

  6. Around a week maby week and a half, u can test it by trying to bend the stem, if it "snaps" instead of bending its either near done or already done.

  7. You just noticed taproots and are wondering which way to hang your plants to dry??

    I don't get it.

If at all possible, have you considered transplanting. or you just want a straight outdoor crop. WHy I say this is that the beginning is very critical. And being in Socal it prolly wont rain enough which will easily kill the seedlings. So if you can, grow in beer cups for a few weeks until they begin to rootbound then transplant into your plot.

    Good luck

  8. sounds good to me, I just started too. Grow in the beer cups till rootbound. From seed it should only take a couple of weeks. Hvve you grown before?
It may seem like they'll never get any bigger but once you get the first 5 fingered leaves growth accelerates dramatically cause it can make more food. You'll stop counting inches of growth and start counting feet.

Oh yeah knowing that the last frost is gone you should be okay. Do you have any goals? They'll be budding in september or somewhere around there so you got um...... 6-8 months of veg to go through our plants are gonna be monsters!!!

I'm planning on growing two now until they're about 1.5-2 footers then add 2 new seedlings to the garden.

  9. King -
I decided to grow them in 5 large plastic beer cups filled with soil, and then transplant when they're rootbound, just like you suggested. I read a few guides, know what I'm doing now. And regarding rain - It seems that during the next month or so we'll be have a lot of storms and such :)

Thanks for the suggestions. They'll bud in September, you think? Dang, long wait :p.

  10. yeah they wont start flowering (getting buds) until the days start getting shorter. You definately have a long wait, and they will be MONSTERS if you start them this early. Hope you have them hid well. You also need to come up with away to keep the critters away from them.

  11. Thanks willydog :). Yeah, I do have a long wait, but it'll make the harvest even more joyful. My friend recommended some pesticide stuff that's made out of garlic, so it won't hurt the crop. Gonna get some today :)

  12. NP and when your there, pee around the area, it'll help scare off some of them.

  13. Heard about that technique. Shouldn't pee right near the plants though right? I was told it overdoes the plants with nitrates (or nitrogen? I forget).

They just sprouted today, by the way. Went to look at there are about 4 little sprouts :), 3 of them look really healthy, the 4th looks a bit weird though.
