First Grow - Need Some Advice

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by 425grow, Oct 15, 2018.

  1. High Everyone,

I am just starting my first grow ever and have bought quite a few things so far that I think will be good to get me started, however, I do have some questions.

Here is a little synopsis of what I have bought so far and the logic why (please let me know if I am on the wrong track):
-Vivosun 36x20x62 tent - wanted a small space so the wife doesn't complain
    4x23w CFL's for the seedlings - cheap (energy,fixtures,bulbs)
1x125w Cfl to add once they need more light
    - 400w HPS/MH ballast with a vent-able hood (24"long x 17" wide x 8"tall
    - Fox Farms Ocean in smart pots. (read soil is forgiving for n00bs and smart pots are the way to go)
    - Carbon filter
    - fan w/ voltage controller

    Here are some questions/concerns:
    - Is the 400W HPS overkill for the size tent I am using?
    - With the size of the tent, the grow light takes up the majority of the overhead space. Is it ok to put the carbon filter on the ground? I am planning on keeping the fan outside the tent to maximize space.
    - As I understand, it is a good rule of thumb to keep a 400W hps 18" from the plant(s), is this too close for this small of a space?
    - How close the 400w light can the carbon filter be (has cotton around it)? I am worried about it getting to hot and starting a fire.

If you got this far, thank you and I am looking forward to your wisdom.

  2. I definitely feel like that's too small of a space for that. But I haven't used HPS in over a year.

If that's the tent you're set on there's some pretty new technology out in the LED side called Quantum boards. There's a few threads on them. But they take up way less room, the run at way less wattage, don't cause near the heat, and people are pulling 1.5-2g per watt on good grows. They've recently came out with their own style of cob lighting which will be a little bigger than a hockey puck.

Also, I used fox farm ocean forest as well starting out. Just don't feed until you have to.
