first grow, long time reader, need suggestions

  1. hi all. i've been wanting to grow since highschool and always told myself when I was on my own (out of the house) I would try to grow. well now I am a couple years removed from the nest and ready to start. I was pretty active on OG and just signed up here.

I am going for a cabinet grow. the one thing I really need help on is finding a suitable cabinet. a quick scour of my home depot today gave me a few ideas but nothing too great. I am looking to grow two plants to get my feet wet at first.

the best thing I saw were some white kitchen cabinets. the one I was looking at was 24 inches wide and 30 inches tall. I am not sure of what dimension I should be looking at for just 2 plants. any help?

the light I am getting is a 65w fluorex CFL. it says on the box it is equivalent to 500w. I have done some searches on these lights and they seem really great and people have had good experiences with them. is a single light of this power good enough for two plants? ill use it for both veg and flower.

Ill get some tomato growing soil from home depot and Ill search for some good nute brands to get.

onto strain. I am looking to go pure indica to mostly indica. also something that is somewhat forgiving. I would start with bag seed but I have been reading about growing for so long (about 5 years) I am pretty confident in being able to pull of a successful grow the first time. Ill be ordering some nirvana probably was thinking about one of these:

    blueberry
    nl
    nl x ?
    papaya
    skunk #1
    super skunk

any suggestions or personal experiences with these strains?

also need some ideas on ventilation. I saw some carbon filters in the kitchen section. would these work at killing odor if placed over the exhaust vent?

  2. I said the same thing to myself and now that I'm far from the nest I am getting ready to do my first grow (starting off with 2 plants - femaleseed.nl's C99). I'm going for a cabinet grow myself and oddly enough I just bought the cabinet you linked. I bought a 40w CFL to start. I was thinking about buying another and hanging both. But if I can get past the beginning stages with CFL I have a 400w HPS coming (may need to downgrade it?). I'm going to mylar mine just because I think mylar is fun, but I'll tell you the inside of the cabinet is all a bright white (except for the ceiling) and I don't think it's necessary to use mylar. I needed to use foam tape around the doors because they did't close tight/evenly. As for how many plants you can fit, well I'm using 8" wide pots and I could easily fit another two in. I want to stay at two though so I can have an oscillating fan. I need help with ventilation too. I'm not quite sure how to go about it. We're pretty much in the same boat!

  3. Its actually quite small, to be honest, buy something a littler taller and that had a bit more room. My plants are about 36 days along now, and I can only fit 2 of them in there (luckily i only have 2!) due to the pot size and the plant size. they are quickly outgrowing the box, specially since the light takes up another few inches of room.

The light can seep in and out, yes. there is about a quarter of an inch at the top, middle, and bottom of the box where air/lgiht can move in and out easily

  4. wouldn't topping/training solve the height issue?

  5. also, wouldn't weather stripping create a light sealed cabinet?

  6. if you are talking about that foam strip which is sticky on one side...Yes its what i use..

  7. good to know. with the fluorex CFL do you need to hang the a few inches from the plant like with regular fluoros or can you mount it near the top?

  8. you need those lights as close as you can with out touching the plant...I dont use them myself but have seen some people do alright with them...

  9. Maybe, but for a first time grower I dont know. personally there just isnt enough room, especially for multiple plants, and anything else you may want in there, like a small fan or something. the back of the box is like a compressed cardboard less then a quarter of an inch thick.

dont get me wrong, its a nice box, but it has some small flaws like light seeping in/out. its not wide enough etc.

  10. I think for 2 plants this box is plenty. I plan on using LST methods to keep the plants low and like I said, used weather stripping/foam tape for the light issue. Good luck.

  11. syztem, do you have any ventilation in your box?

I am thinking of possibly drilling a hole at the top and fitting it some sort of exhaust covered with a kitchen hood filter. maybe a computer or bathroom fan?

  12. Ive got a mini fan i bought at walmart for 9 dollars. thats stronger then a 12v PC fan that i use for ventilation. it works ok, however im about to move my plants outside of it now and into a real grow closet.
