First Grow. Is this normal?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by matumbo, Jan 9, 2011.

  1. Hi guys,

Been on the forum for not too long but I am very impressed with what everyone has done. A friend of mine sent me some pictures of his grow and was wondering if his growth is normal.

It's 'blueberry punch' (blueberry X romulan) and is currently under CFLs. They are about 1 week old.

  2. In terms of growth rate things look normal.

It looks kind of like he might have a few bugs nibbling on them though.

  3. I'm assuming you mean by the odd shape of the leaves yes? That's what he was mostly concerned about. I'll read into this more to see what could be eating at it. Any ideas as to how this might have happened though? (these were grown from seed in a new grow tent).

    Thanks again.

  4. I'm not sure what it could be... If the grow tent is outside you may run into bug problems. If it's inside...i'm not really sure where OR what would be eating em...

    Any house pets...?

  5. maybe the roots want more room?

  6. I have seen this before quite a few times. The seedcoat gets stuck to the embryo. does your friend know if the seedcoat still stuck to the seedling when it emerged from the soil? In my experience it comes from not soaking the seeds in water long enough, or burying it to shallow in the soil. Or it could possibly be from the light getting to close to the plant. In any case the plant looks healthy, and i would guess, by the 3rd, or fourth set of leaves it will be fine. They call it weed for a reason, it is super hardy, and it looks like it will be fine.

  7. For this particular plant, the seed was shed on its own(as well as the embryo).

I know what you are talking about when you mention the embryo because with some of the other ones that were germinated and planted at the same time(hash plant) had this problem. He manually took off this embryo from the other ones and the plants seem to be doing fine. On some of them he also had to take the whole seed off because the plant didn't seem like it was going to shed it.

Is it a bad to have to take the embryo/seed casing off manually or should one wait and hope the plant does it on its own?

It's strange how this one looks all funky and it seemed to sprout the best at the beginning. I'm guessing it might be due to the not being in water long enough as you mentioned. I think he may have planted the seed too soon.

I've attached a few more pics from when the plant was younger incase this might change your hypothesis.

Thanks again. Much appreciation for all of the answers.

Hi, I have taken off the seed casings manually before, and at first they usually look quite ragged, but if you have enough light, and proper amount of water, they always seem to recover. If the "mutant" is the same height as the other plants, and it is still growing, it will be fine!! Good luck, keep us posted

Also that is not from insect damage so don't worry about what other people posted. Insect damage doesn't look like that. Unfortunately I know exactly what insect damage looks like. ie spider mites, and white fly's

looks to me that they are streching a bit already...im not 100% on that but i had at least 2 sets of nice developed leafs well before getting to that hieght at 1 week(and no im not growin indica...its 75% sativa). How far away are the lights? just curious. CFLs loose a considerable amount of their light spectrum when 4 inches or more away from the plant. 2 inches is best for vegatative growth

....and i to have VERY carefully removed a embryo from the seedling....as long as u are gentle this can do nothing but help the plant and possible speed up the next couple a days of growth.

couple pics as an example of what i mean by stretching apposed to not stretching for light.....Kandy Kush and Tangerine Dream 1 week 1 day

  10. Those first 2 problems look like the roots are suffering.

Either from lack of oxygen, or water.

I experienced this when I first started, I cracked open my rock wool and my roots were all brown and rotting.

  11. Thanks! I will definitely keep everyone posted.

There's no real way to check my roots I guess in this case since I'm using soil. I'll just hope for the best I guess!

  12. Mine are DEFINITELY stretched. I say stretched because I made a rookie mistake. I was told that after germination to put the seeds in soil and in a dome and on top of a seedling mat with no light until they have sprouted about an inch or so.
Let me tell you, some of these sprouted 2-3 inches overnight and were drooping like crazy. I put them in the light right away and they are all somewhat correcting themselves. I have high hopes for these ones.

I have a couple that didn't germinate(the seed only cracked but did nothing else) and I planted those and left them in the dome under the light. Those seem to be doing the best so far!

  13. I've attached some pics of how close the lights are(I just took the dome off so they were about 1 inch higher before).

The plant in question looks healthier :)

His neighbour though seems to be leaning over. Any advice? I turned the cup just to show that it's leaning.. He was initially leaning the other way.

I've also included some pics of the random ones from the batch(they are all hash plant.. except for one.. which is blueberry punch). I know lots of them are bad due to my earlier rookie mistake.
