First grow - I'm known to kill house plants with my presents

  1. Hey guys,

Thought I'd post this in the absolute beginner's forum since I'm known to wilt regular house plants simply with my presents. I've been reading a bit on the forum for the last few days and thought I would post.

So I've started a new hobby which is slowly starting to become an obsession. I have one plant out of over a dozen bag seeds collected over the years, the rest didn't even germinate. I was hoping for at least 3 or 4 but what are you going to do. I may end up getting some clones in the next little while but we'll wait and see.

I'm growing with one grow panel 45 from sunshine systems recommended to me by a friend since I live in an apartment and wattage is of concern and have 2 20watt CFL's from OTT lite that I picked up from a hardware store with clamp lights from home depot. I have another spare CFL to put in later. I thinking of getting a 150 watt HPS from a reputable local Hydroponics shop later on for flowering.

Basically decided to add the CFL's as I've heard LED's aren't very good for penetration for lower leaves, and the LED simply wasn't producing enough heat, I left on a business trip on the first week and when I came back the temps were only about 19c/66f with the light on. With the CFL's now the temp is a steady 28c/82.5f.

Humidity jumps around quite a bit, but seems to be between 38% - 58% I've seen it as high as 69% at one point but its been pretty low lately between 38% - 42%.

My first mistakes seemed to have been with re-potting, and the soil but hey I'm still learning, I don't think I placed my plant/soil high enough but i don't think its a huge deal just yet, I'm just hoping the leaves are able to clear the top of the pot. For soil, I mixed some Scott's Potting mix (feeds 30 days) and Shultz potting mix (feeds 60 days) ya I know, i should have gone organic but I'll know for next time.

I have a fan pretty close blowing indirectly at my baby and for air exchange I have 2 PC fans one lower fan blowing in and one upper fan blowing out. A lot of vertical room to grow since I constructed my box out of a clothes rack and some 97% reflective bubble insulation.

I've been watering about every 5 days with distilled water with a PH of around 6 - 6.5.

So far at day 19 since sprouting I'm seeing lot of new veg growth but still vertical growth is very slow. I've been slowly raising the lights about an inch each watering but vertical growth is still very minimal to the point where the lowest leaves are almost touching soil, it almost looks like the plant is sinking or something i don't know if this is normal. My first set of leaves looked a little deformed but the top leaves now look to be normal.

I'd thought I'd post just to see what some experienced folks think
