First Grow, Decided to keep a grow journal....

Discussion in 'Indoor Grow Journals' started by ogderp84, Oct 21, 2014.

  1. So I've began my journey into growing a few weeks ago and started a grow journal, id much rather have my journal on here as its much easier, so im going to go ahead and transport my log into this post and bring it up to date with a updated post from today...

Keep in mind i gathered these seeds through about a year of smoking since moving to California and decided to randomly begin to germ them one day with zero previous knowledge of what im doing at all whatsoever... therefore i have been researching and studying since midway through germination, and having zero necessities for growing. This is my first grow attempt, and a learning process along the way while mainly going with trial and error. I have pretty limited growing space and have already at this point completely changed my grow station.

    Attempt #1 Start Date 9/27

begin to germ seeds. ( six on 1 papertowel, folder in half, dampened, repeat with second papertowel... placed ontop one another... placed in sealed tupperwear container and placed on tank of toilet )

    Inspect Date 10/3

    12 successful germinate seeds.

    Transplant Date 10/4

Decide to use nightstand cabinet as temp grow room until i can figure out a set up.

1st grow room set up, towel under 12 quart size plants, 1CFL 70w 23wused 800 lumen Reveal Light hanging 1 inch from plants. 1 small dish to give small humidity. little fan for constant movement. blinds in cabinet doors for ventilation.

    1- Reveal CFL 70w using 23w bulb ( producing 800 Lumens )
1- small dish filled with water for a humidity change
1- small fan/heater to circulate air
2-Blinds on doors of cabinets for ventilation
1- 1.5 Cubic Feet bag of Fox Farms Ocean Forrest Soil
1- Spray bottom with downward nozzle
    1- ph manual test kit

Transplant seedlings into quart size pots. Fill 1/2 inch below top of pot with soil. Dig small hole, insert seeling, fill hole. Repeat with all 12. Obtained a Ph level of 6.5 and watered plants ( this was prior to knowing proper water and just watered using 1 1/2 cups at room temp to water the entire grow. Put plants on a manual 18/6 light scedule with a room temp of 80 degree's.

    Soil Update 10/6

Soil burned some leaves, not seeing much growth or any changes at all. Watered 1 1/2 cups water Ph 7 entire grow

    Growth Update 10/8

5 Plants dead/broken. Overwatering, watered 3 days in a row. 3 plants have slight growth but dont seem like they will make it. 4 doing well healthy growth and first set of leaves coming in.

    Daily Update 10/10

Got some super thrive as per a friend to help aquire a better root system as roots seem to be non existant. Added 1 tspoon to gallon Ph 7.0, brought Ph to 6.5 watered 1 1/2 cups for entire grow.

    UPDATE 10/21

Moved plants to new grow room, currently have 5 plants growing... a few burn spots on some plants i believe to be transplant shock.

Repotted plants into larger containers with 20% coco 80% ocean forest... watered new soil fully until i got some drainage. created hole sprinkled some root accelerant in hole, potted plant. repeated for all 5 plants. now have 2 CFL Reveal Bulbs generating 1600 lumens , as well as a dish shaped reflector on middle. Getting a 4300 lumen CFL tonight to have as center bulb in set up, as well as 3 side flourescent tubes each 800 lumens. Have had some positive growth as second set of leaves are coming in. Still have one im ify about due to some major burn and having to top half of the plant ( you will notice which plant in pictures ) but she is coming along ( topped 1 week ago today ).

Have watered 4 times since the 10th, full waterings ( until drainage begins... usually 3/7 of a gallon between 5 plants ) , with superthrive used as directed ( decided to no longer use Super Thrive as i dont really think it does anything from my observation ).

Also changed plants to a 24/0 light cycle... and they transitioned nicely as day by day i had less and less darkness until it was solid 24 light peroid.

been watering with water between 6.0 and 6.5

Tested Ph soil run off water today after watering... used 4/5 gallon for watering 5 plants. watered with Ph of 6.5 my run off was 6.0 ( i havent read much about run off testing but i was curious to see the difference.... is this good? bad? normal? any info would be appreciated )

dont know how they are doing growth wise, between 7-10 nodes on all plants, only 2 to 3 sets of leaves on entire plants... ( good for plants germed on the 27th of sept? )

i've shared photo's to show progress, and current set up they will be attached in comments below.

  3. I am about a month ahead of you, that's it, from no knowledge to omg research to wow this is fun.  I saw that u watered with a large amount.  I water my 2gallon bucket about .5 gallons, unless flushing it through all the way.   so no water out of the bottom is 0% runoff, 1gallon out the bottom in a 2 gallon pot is 50% runoff, and so on.  so water with maybe 10% runoff and then let em dry for 2-3-4 days than again.   also I learned all kinds and typed about it, heres my old link and new journal.
    "up to now"> http://forum.grasscity.com/grow-room-designsetup/1330507-complete-setup-closet-grow-sog-environment.html
and this one is my new journal, from now forward - all set uphttp://forum.grasscity.com/coco-coir/1339321-puppycat-grow-kaya-gold-cocoperlite.html

GL its fun reading and learning.
best advice is to let em be cause they are prob fine

  4. I find myself making tweets and changes to my set up and room basically modifying it while growing in the process.... It's fun for sure! But such a headache at the same time haha. I see so make radical changes in such short intervals, all terrifying... In the sense that I don't know enough to know if one day I'll wake up one random day and they are all dead haha.

Good to know about the run off percentages... I guess I'd say whenever I water since my first legit knowledgable watering I logged I've been watering with a like 2-5% runoff, only about two shots worth comes out, I use I guess it would be a half gallon pot. How much run off is your typical watering after the few days with no watering. I have to keep in mind I added about 10-15% coco to each pot when I am considering run off. ( so many variables involved with this stuff.... I love it, I'm a bud-tender and professional body piercer.... Two industries/hobbys/careers/lives that are forever learning always advancing, but I've notice both also have great communities I'm thrilled to now be a part of both with you as my first comment to a post, 2nd post ever)... I'll check out your grow, I enjoy seeing newbies like myself starting the same way as me and how they begin.

It's off my plants seem very stunted in comparison to others I've seen seemingly younger than mine even. I hope they are ok. I had to top the other side of the one I topped last week... It became very droopy and leathery and dark in color so with the heavy weight on the one side, and the new growth blooming on the other side I decided to snip it to balance it out. A few other leaves on a few other plants look and feel like they are headed that way... So I'm cramming trying to figure this one out now haha. I have a few leaves also like spiraling and trying to like flip and curl and turning a tad yellow whereas most leaves on entire plants are perfect each plant has at least one fan leaf doing this... Idk why. Well, back to studying... Can't wait to see your progress!

  5. UPDATE 10/23

not much to update since repotting and transporting plants into new grow set up. Had some further trouble with the one plant i mentioned on the 21st to have me worried about whether she will make it or not... the mild burn led to me coming home from work to a very droopy, very dark ( almost the deepest green ive ever seen on a plant ), and very leathery/shiney. having so many problems with this plant the entire grow, i removed this leaf, this is also the same plant i removed the largest fan leaf off of last week, there is enough new growth on it to keep it alive, the stem is balanced out and standing straight now no longer hanging almost to the ground from mthe weight only have one large leaf.... im not sure what caused the discoloring of hat leave or the issue with the plant but i had to do this the night of my original post, and as of this morning it is looking good.

had my wife take a picture of my babies while i was at work and send it to me, this was around 3pm, all plants looked perfectly normal ( normal for my plants at least ) ... when i had arrived at home at about 8 ( and i will include a picture in the next comment after this post )... a noticed this darkness taking over some of my plant. ALL other plants, perfectly fine, but i have not done anything to try and reverse this issue yet... i have no idea what happened but and seeing it it will jut fix itself as living things are amazing as recovering themselves. does anyone have any clue as to what this could be or wht could have cause this? the areas that are totally darker than the rest of the plant... i noticed were directly in the path of the fan and the cool air blowing from the fan ( possibly too close to the fan and that part of the plant became too cold? ) thats all i can think of, but ive moved the from that spot since... otherwise... everything goe smoothly as of right now.

decided to get another duplicate pot to match my current grow pots, to fill with dirt keep dry and weigh, then water... an weigh to help me figure out when i want to water my girls. its all a learning process and i know this grow is going to be mainly for educational and expireance purposes only... the next grow will be the real deal.
