Hey everyone! This will be my first grow and I'm looking forward to it in more ways than I can count. However, I'm in need of some advice on building my growbox. The space I have is this creepy attic type space accessed by a small door in my room. The environment in their is pitch black with coool attic air. It also has a bunch of exposed insulation and smells like an attic. For this reason, I planned to build a grow box and have an active air intake pulling seemingly fresher air from my bedroom. The question is, would I be fine with creating a passive air intake instead of active. My worries are the attic smell and maybe air quality. Dimensionally, I have the growbox conceptually designed to 33" tall x 29" wide by 80" deep. The plan is to run t5ho down the roof and have some cfls on the sides. This shorter room height I was thinking of just autoflowers but am now reading that some grow a lot bigger than the 33" I have to work with. Also read that autos don't necessarily respond well to height controlling techniques like topping, lst, and scrog. Any advice on what to do? Don't want to start building and spending until I'm concrete with my plans. Thank you so much in advance. And happy 4/20 day I originally posted this in the newbie thread before I saw there was a thread dedicated to grow room ideas
Attics aren't the best environment to grow in , they get too hot in summer and too cold in winter, takes a hell of a lot of work to build an dial in the temps and humidity and looking at your attic will end up costing more than a tent in the setup side of things. If that's not a problem you need 3/4" osb for the floor, insulation for rafters and any other wall really , then 1/4" ply to cover that . Silicone to join the seams to make it airtight , white paint , mylar or panda film for the walls . You also need an intake and exhaust port , where you planning on drawing air from /exhausting air to? There's no solid plan In diy attoc grow room building the trick is to insulate it from the outside world and suss out what fan you need to cool it . With cfls you may think heat is not an issue but watt for watt hps/cfls have around the same heat output especially when you need to keep cfls within a few inches of the plant . Also the fact your tiles , slates or shingles hold are likely black and radiate heat into the attic , which I do have a couple of diy fixes for that problem also (probably look sketchy if badly done) Your list is as follows ; *3/4 " osb *insulation *1/4" ply *silicone or caulk *extractor fan (heat exchange) *pedestal fan (air circulation ) *lights *timers *hygrometer *white emulsion or reflective material Run an attic through at least two days that vary in weather to see how your temps are for making adjustments before adding plants to the room .saying two days loosely as that should be a couple of weeks as on days that have little air movement or wind and plenty sun will soon start baking your attic .
