First Grow Box! (comments/suggestions?)

  1. Hey again, I posted a half-ass post yesterday asking about my lights and some of the replies said I should get better bulbs, and I figured it would be easiest to explain my situation by posting a whole thing, pics & all.

My little grow box is in the back of my closet which is pretty much the only place I could find that could hide it decently.

    Closet:

I have it set up so that I can hoist the top lid off of it with a rope around my clothes hanger pole. Also, no I am not 6, I just have a lot of things from when I was in school from waaaaay back:D. After hoisting the lid:

There arn't any pots inside because I havent found any I like yet. This is my current light & ventalation set up:

The camera was uber under-exposed which is why everything looks dark. This is where my lighting concerns come in to play, I only have room for about two sockets, I know it looks like I could add another but that space is taken up on the top :(. I have a 120mm fan moving about 70cfm. The two lights I have are the following specs:

    Light 1:
    25w , 1300lumens , 5700k

    Light 2:
    20w, 1200lumens, 2700k

People told me this wasn't enough light so if you know of any more powerful cfl's and where to get them that would be awsome. Nothing online though too much of a hassle.

Alright so lets close her back up and throw on a shirt for high-tech camo :D.

And we're back to my lovely closet:

So basically, anything you want to comment on or ask is fair game. This is my first grow box and I'll take all the help I can get. Thanks!

  2. v3,

Neat like box you have there. It's plenty small though, I don't think your going to fit thre plants in there. One plant will need about 12"x12" space plus you need at least 30"plus for height. You could start them in there but you will need t oup grade once they are a couple of weeks old.

  3. The chamber is 2' diameter and 40" high. In that case maybe I'll only grow 1 or 2 and hope i get a female.

  4. can you fit 2 of these in your sockets that are in your top [IMG] if so id get 1 more of each bulb and run 4 in thare that might work if the y sockets will fit or run 4 of the 5700k for veg and then run 4 of the 2700k for flower

  5. Try seeing if you can use larger pots, the small pots you have are going to be too small. Just use the same setup and go as big as you can with the space you have. Also if your using CFLs, you can wire you lights and circuit them together. Try this link for the OG "how-to" http://www.drugs-forum.com/growfaq/1477.htm ..its also a good place for learning about CFLs. Cheers:D

  6. Alrite, I think I solved my lighting problems :)

I went out to walmart and picked up a pair of the biggest cfl's I could find here are the specs:

Each one draws 42w and produces 2700lumens and are 6500k.

So thats a total of 5400lumens as compared to my previous 2300 :D.

    Sound good?

  7. Its a beginning :) use the light socket the other guy showed you and bump it up 2x

  8. For a micro grow such as this i think you should be alright with your lights.. maybe add a few more smaller ones. Having your CFL's set up in a 90 degree angle spreads more light to the plant then if it was just pointing straight at it. And is that tinfoil on the bottom/top? You might have a problem with the tinfoil reflecting concentrated light towards the plant (causing it to burn the plant) Though i don't know if this applys to CFLs. In any case i would suggest buying one or two of those emergency space blankets and applying them to your growbox instead of tinfoil. Also if you don't already have your light fixtures set up in some type of pulley system, your going to want to move those CFLs much closer to the plant (about 1-4 inches) and as it grows keep adjusting the light on a regular basis to mantain that distance. (that picture with the two bulbs is the top part right?)

I would suggest getting a few more CFLs.. your gonna want a combination of cool white and warm white for full spectrum lighting. Tight space so make sure the fan is giving enough air flow.
And once your plants start to small i suggest buying a TrueAir odor eliminator- http://trueair.com/odor_eliminators/04251.html You can find them at Wal-mart, Target etc.

Looking decent so far keep it up.
