Hey all, I'm new to extraction but have recently been tasked with extracting a decent amount of fresh-frozen trim that I'd like to make the most of. While I first considered making RSO because I don't have any equipment, I'd love to try to achieve something cleaner if possible. Right now I'm trying to figure out what gear I'd want aside from a rotovap to extract on a regular basis, I'd like to give it at least one test run before doing that. I plan to extract with ethanol and possibly heptane for improved results. For a decent product, it seems I would at least need a Buchner funnel filtering setup to winterize & filter all the chlorophyll and lipids present in the trim, along with a vacuum chamber to effectively purge the final product (which if I'm not mistaken wouldn't need a cold trap if I'm only removing trace amounts of solvents after open air purging with light heat which would be done outdoors with a spark-free heat source). Am I too optimistic or could I give this an attempt with only those two pieces of equipment? I know that long term I would want a rotovap to recover the ethanol/heptane if I end up doing this regularly for a friend but I want to start with the essentials and see what I get first. Feedback is very much appreciated, thank you.
using alcohol to further extract fresh frozen bubble hash is your first problem. Waste of bubble hash If your just going to make RSO use the whole plant and skip the hash process.
Hm well I am working with fresh frozen trim, not bubble hash though my friend did have the idea of making that I was thinking a solvent extraction would be better to get anything of value. I’m thinking I should either do a heptane extraction to get the cleanest possible pull from so much wet plant material, or an ethanol extraction that I winterize then remove the chlorophyll by dissolving in water and pulling with heptane. If this works I will get a small distillation setup to recover heptane or ethanol and should be set for small scale extractions. Does this sound reasonable?
That looks like an interesting technique but at the moment I’m focused on the basics of appropriate solvents and removal.
If you want RSO follow this, really dont need all that fancy stuff. Buchner funnels are for drawing out moisture from bubble hash so it drys faster in large batches to preserve flavor, its just a cheap alternative to expensive freeze dryers. Not needed if your making edible extracts since you're not going to taste them. Rotovap is if you want to make your own vape ready product, vac chamber is for purging butane extracts. Just Decarb and wash with everclear, then reduce to RSO consistency. no need for anything else. Thank you, for sure. I was thinking I might be able to get something dabbable and better looking using the same technique but maybe it’s not worth it with trim.
With just one run of trim, not really worth buying a whole setup... if you're doing it on harvests on the regular then sure.
