Hello all, I have been following pretty much all of your active journals and have gotten quite alot of great info, hopefully enough to have a sucessful harvest mid feb. I germinated using wet paper towels which I have done before and know it works and it did. I potted my first two in 8 oz styrofoam cups and stuck them under a 150 watt brand of america fluro (Great cheap lights from walmart). I am doing a soil grow and use Promix seedling and potting mix mixed with an extra 8 oz cup of perlite. I gave them a few days and them moved them under a 400 watt hps. I have a MH light on order but it is being held up which sux. I think I had the light too low as the first set of single fingered leaves curled upwards slightly on the outsides and a couple of brown spots appeared on the leaves. I raised the light to 4' or so and hope that fixes it. here is my basic sprouting setup under the fluro
here are the first two at roughly two weeks. Sorry about the pic quality. I had to use a crappy cell phone cam for these but oh well:
I was suprised how quickly the root system grew as they only last about six days in the styrofoam before the roots started to bind. I bought a couple of pots with good drain holes nad picked up a 60 lb bag of gravel that I washed and then lined the bottom a few inches:
and finally here is my grow room setup. I am using a windowless room in my basement in an old victorian brick house the second pic is the N fert I could find. It is 20-0-0 and directions say to spread 1 tablespoon per sq. foot of topsoil and rake it in 1-3" deep. the two oldest are about old enough to fert so I figure 1 TBS fert per gallon water? Going to start with a 1/2 TBS at first though. Anyone have any advice on this as I would regret burning them up.
Morning... Am no expert on this , infact you may well know more than me.. But wouldnt you be better off with a more balanced fert??? I.E 20-10-10 or 10-10-10
20-10-10 would probably work but organic growers all rave about bloodmeal for veg and bone meal for flowering so to keep it simple I went with bloodmeal. If I want other stuff added I can do that. But with it being 20-0-0, it seems rather high to me so I wanted to know if 1 TBS per gallon of water seems right. Course I'll start with 1/2 TBS first. Of course if anybody has a good water soluble fert for vegging they recommend, then let me know and hopefully I can find it. Most stores here, even walmart sized ones, have very little left in the gardening sections. They replaced most of the stuff with sleds and crap.
Well here they are after roughly two weeks. They are under a 400w HPS but should be under a 400 MH as I ordered the bulb on Ebay Nov.1 and still haven't gotten. Supposedly it is showing up Monday. These pics are a test with an incredibly ancient digicam that can only hold 8 pics and downloads them to the computer via a serial port connection. I think it was made in the 1940's. hehe. Does anyone have a fairly common water soluable vegging nute to recommend as the blood meal makes me nervous. One TBS per gallon of soil seems like an awful lot of mixing to prevent root burn and it isn't very water soluable. It just floats on the top. The plants are two weeks old for the oldest two down to around 5 days on the youngest. The second pic is the general grow area and the others are of the the two oldest. Going to start LST on these soon. There are still a couple in styrofoam but I am getting lazy on transplanting as they are really tall and most likely I am thinking male. They'll go into pots tomorrow.
They look as though they are almost stretched for light :S But that can't be. What kind of plant is that over in the corner there? A dead one I guess. lol. Good luck on your grow, everything looks in working order. Hopefully you wont get fertburn and all that. It's pretty hard to avoid though when you're just fiddling with organics your first time around. I found that out the hard way, I was just better off getting some regular -fert when you water- ferts, that are water soluble and dissolve with the water so you can't over fert. Gotta love it. Anyways, I hope your bulb gets there soon, they're lookin pretty healthy and I hope your genetics are great.
Thanks swaenK for the wishes! The other plants are some dying flowers I just brought in from the cold. Took pity on them but I think they are perenials (sp) and will die anyway. Just wanted to see what they did under the light. I got almost all planted in big pots. One is in a pepsi bottle in the back for now. It was one of the tall ones I think (more of a feeling) is male. They could have started light streched from being too far from the fluro when they sprouted. I have been following your NB & AK grow and that is impressive. I wanted to do NB myself and I prolly will after this first grow tho by then it will probably be "*Yawn* Not another NB journal" hehe. Going to see if I can find some better ferts as the soil thing seems too intimidating. Thanks for the advice. That's what this forum is all about The strain of this is unknown. It is commercial weed I been buying in little $5 dollar bags but I think it is awesome. Ater smoking it for years it still gets me high from one bong hit. Bought a bunch of expensive $60-$80 8th's that I quickly seemed to grow immune to and wasn't impressed. I could also have just been ripped off hehe. Anyways... The first pic is just a general shot. The second is of the two oldest who start LST tomorrow. Again, sorry about the quality of the pics. This cam is so ancient I think I may have to change the tubes in it. lol.
Hmm deffinitely consider the NB. It fucking rocks, it grew twice as fast as my AK47. I have yet to see it turn blue though . I want blue buds.
I tied down the three oldest last night but I didn't want to bend the stems too much and also fed all the first weakened N fert in water. The tops on the three I managed to get pulled horizontal but when I checked this morning, all three had a spurt of growth and the tops started to straighten up so I figure all I managed to do is get the stem closer to the side. Guess it is a start. The topic above refers to the start of LST: Alice in Chains. Yeah, swaenK, I am looking forward to your first taste test of that NB. What I would really want is a strain that is mostly sativa high as in reality I don't really need the Indica buzz to obtain couch lock. It is bada enough as it is with a play station hehe. The new MH bulb should arrive tomorrow.
Don't know if I mentioned the MH bulb showed up Monday so they all got MH light for the last 6 hours. I also started weak MG nuted water and Tues. morning they all looked so green and vibrant and grew at least an inch. So nobody liked my AIC joke...boy, *tugs at collar* tough room hehe. I like how Igot the 'dead' flower in the back to bloom again.
Lookin' good. Good to see your bulb came in. What you need to do is get some white on black poly, or mylar and create some sort of confined area because you are losing a lot of light effiency through the sides. I would at least consider some baffles. I also bet your MH could go a little bit lower, but I don't know what your heat problem is like. Good luck man.
Hi Lucian, I agree with swaenk, you need to capture all that light - look at the amount hitting the white wall in your photo!! I'd move the plants closer to the wall and use that white surface to reflect the light back. Training looks like its off to a good start, all the plants look excellent. Lets hope they're all girls. Happy growing......... Polski.
Well, I lowered the light to about 3 feet from the tops. We will see how that goes. Yeah, the plants are about one pot diameter from the white wall which is flat white paint so I am kinda using it. I am too lazy to want to build anything and figure they will do fine. Guess I will find out. I was thinking maybe build something to cover the open side of the reflector but who knows. On another note, I passed on the NB for my first seed order and bought AK99. I can hardly wait. Now I just need to setup my fluro tube fixture in another room so I can take clones from my first grow and sprout the AK99 *wrings hands* Excellent!
well I watered them last 6 days ago, they are in 5quarts of promix with an extra 8 oz of perlite added. The bottoms of the buckets have washed gravel for extra drainage. 6 days ago I mixed up liquid M Grow fert with the water at half strength and the results were great. Today I watered them with more fert and about 4 hours later the two oldest are droopy with some others showing a slight crinkling like parchment yet the leaves are not drying just ...slightly wrinkly...reminds me of spinach. Odd. I think it maybe overwatering? I figured watering once a week would be ok. If they aren't better in 12 hours or so, I'll post a pic. Don't know if I should flush or wait. Hope they are better in the morning.
First off,the plants seem fine tho there is a slight wilt towards the tips on some of the leaves. The middle blade on one of the 5 fingered leaves had an odd pure white lightning bolt streak from the edge into the middle of the leaf. Yesterday morning the streak regained alot of green color but is still noticably lighter than the rest of the leaf. Does anybody know what might cause this symptom? I tried to take a pic of it the next morning and it didn't come out but will post it anyway. just caught a buzz of my dwindling bag of dirt and started thinking about this 5' long double tube fluro fixture I have which I am planning to use for clones. My (brilliant! hehe) idea is to use LST to bend a mom 90 degrees and grow her out completely horizontal along the length of the low hung fluro. Would this work or is it just a pipe dream?
