Financial advice?

  1. Ok so here's the story:

After I turned 19, medicaid decided to let me go. And as I wasn't on medicaid I went to a few doctor visits for a Xolair shot (asthma) and a treatment (which was not needed, but she thought it was). Anyways now I'm stuck with $2,100 in bills.

I've been paying on them little by little and there's 3 separate ones. One is for $220. I just paid $70 for April so it'll now be $150.

I have a $520 which I just billed $120 for so it'll now be $400 whenever they get my check.

And I have a bill for $1,379. I paid $100 for this month so $1,279.

So all in all $1,879 in bills starting the first of April.

I have a $100/month payment plan for the $1,279 bill and a $25/month for the $150. I have yet to make one for the $520/$400.

Should I keep going with the minimal payment plan? Or should I put whatever extra money I make into them also?

I got $450 in the bank right now, just got paid today (I get paid weekly, roughly $220 a week) and I got $310 in other bills for the end of this month (March). I need some money lying around for gas/oil change/etc.

I'd really like to get the bills out of the way so I can focus on other things but I'm not sure if that's what I should do....any ideas/suggestions/advice? Just want another's opinion on this 'cause my parents aren't much help.

  2. Damn you got a rough life... :( just keep pushing through it won't take too long.

  3. my life is going pretty well aside from the bills. just always running into money problems! after i get these out of the way i plan on getting a complete system for my car and having it all hooked up for $800 or i might just get all the speakers and have my cousin do it for free. but before i can do any of that i'd like to get the bills out of the way.

  7. If they aren't charging you interest on what you owe, then it makes no difference. Only YOU know if you can spare extra cash to pay extra.

If you can, pay the minimum and save a bit each payday. It doesn't have to be a lot, but save SOMETHING.

The key to having money is....(drumroll) don't spend. :)

Once your medical bills are paid off, then save half of what you giving the hospital. You'll not only have a pretty good savings going but you will only be half as bad off as you are now.

It happens to everyone...right now I'm paying off a 3,500.00 medical bill! I hate it but that's life.

  8. Medical bills seem to cost a fortune not trying to run it in but glad I live in the uk where we don't have to pay for medical care

  9. Pay as much as you can without eliminating things you really need like food and so on. Debt is is a modern form of slavery that will limit way too much of your life. Avoid it when at all possible and when not possible pay it off as soon as you can.

Once it is paid off, take that $800 and put it in a savings account instead of buying a system that will only depreciate in value and will be gone in a few years anyway. Afterwards add 10% or more of each paycheck in the savings account. Eventually you will get to a point where a visit to the doctor doesn't result in financial problems. You mention you are always running in to money problems. The only ways to avoid that in the future are spending less and making more.

As you build a savings account, you can start to consider other investment options such as mutual funds, stocks, CD's and so on.

  10. "...don't have to pay for medical care DIRECTLY...." you mean.

It's paid for...and you are paying, just not at the time is all. Nothing is free.

  13. Stu - I really hate to break it to you man but of course you do - they just take it out of your paycheck each week in the form of taxes.

  14. How can you say or even think that?

No one is forcing you to do anything. Slavery is and always has been FORCED - Debt is totally and completely up to the individuals choice.

These things are not even vaguely the same.

  15. I don't pay taxes man I get what you mean about it not being free I'm sure in say way I pay towards it

  16. Debt is not always voluntary. Need a house, go in debt. Want a job to make money but can't get one without a car, go in debt. The whole system is rigged to encourage debt. And yes, debt is modern slavery. I agree totally that it is vastly different than being beaten, tortured, murdered, or being bought and sold. That would never pass in a "civilized" modern society. At the root of slavery was oppression and the use of human beings for nothing more than selfish gain for those unwilling to work for themselves. Today debt, and economic control is used to accomplish those same goals. It helps to keep people "in their place". As long as individuals have debt they have higher need to work which provides an ample workforce. Ask any ten people you know that owe a bunch of money if they would do something different if money was no longer a problem. I bet 8 of them will tell you something completely different than what they do today. Debt limits and controls how individuals are able to live their lives. I consider that pretty fucking evil. The only time it makes sense is if you are in debt for something that will appreciate more rapidly than you interest rate, or you can build equity.

No one is forcing you to do Jack. As a matter of fact you can get up and leave wherever you are right now. No one says you need a fancy car or a fancy house.

You can go live in a tent and ride a bicycle.

Edit: by the way - stop feeling sorry for yourself. You have many more opportunities than many folks in the world and here you are calling yourself a slave. How about you call yourself “privileged” or “lucky” instead. There’s so many in this world that will never have anywhere near the opportunities that you have.

Man - it’s too bad you couldn’t call yourself a slave in front of somebody - no, a group of folks that actually we’re slaves - maybe then you realize how silly you sound and would stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Slave my ass. Because you’re allowed to be able to buy things...

    What a joke.

  19. You've got to pay to breathe?.. If that happens in England then I think I'm going to stop breathing.. Can you literally not do anything to get free medication? Especially for asthma, it's like it should be against human rights..?

  20. Maybe ask for your share of the money the government sends to criminals all around the globe.
