Finally deciding to start

  1. Hi all, been lurking the forums for a few weeks now, good to be here. I live alone in an apartment and have a spare closet i can use for growing. The problem is this though: Its right on top of the water heater, and heat isnt that good for plants i take it. Ive started germinating about 10 seeds, so far 3 are popping up.
Heres a photo of the closet i plan to use. What i can do is take out the top board you see, and leave the other one in.
    My questions are these:
    1. Is the heat from the water heater going to be too bad, or should i just leave the door open a bit and itll be fine?
    2. How many plants should i put in there in total? Im planning a 3 or 4 month grow cycle.
    3. Where should i put the flouro lights? (i havent purchased any yet..)

  2. like i said before, if you don't know anything read before you ask questions. I don't know if the heat will be bad or not, depends how hot your light makes the room.

  3. looks like a good spot to grow, mylar or flat white paint, fluors, extract fan and fresh air and bit of reading youll get there.. lights above and sides with fluros you can put them anywhere

  4. Yeah i shouldve read more before opening my mouth, i sorry, ill try not to let it happen again...
I took off the top shelf, first prep cleaned the walls with a mild bleach and water mix to get rid of contaminants, lined everything with aluminum foil (for now, im a n00b), and picked up a thermometer for 1.00, the temp goes from mid 70s to mid 80s, depending how hot it is in my apt, which i can control with a/c...so its all good there..
So far im doing good, i made a nice mixture from peat moss, vermiculite and perlite, found some 30/10/10 fertilizer to start the vegetation cycle..The only problem im at is with Lights..I know i want a 400w of each hps and mh, the only problem is those dreaded ballasts..Im still working on it though. So far about 10 babies are sprouting up, so its not all bad news :p

Any advice/links on ballasts and lighting would be helpful. http://www.e-conolight.com has a 400 watt ballast of each for about 50 bucks and bulbs for about 10 bucks each, but it doesnt say anything else, like if theyre the same type and all that. If they are ill just buy a ballast then get a converter bulb for the other type somewhere else...Or am i doing something wrong?
    Heres the links in question:

    http://www.e-conolight.com/Product/EProducts.asp?ProductFamilyID=12

If anyone knows about these and if theyre just plug-in-and-go and even if the bulbs are compatible with the ballast, please let me know. I emailed them yesterday, still no reply..
Im still in the dark about how to know whether i have to set up a ballast or if its pre-fixed so all i have to do is plug it in and go, but i know the types of bulbs on their site.
Anywho, thanks for the help so far, looks like ill be growing about 5 or 6 females in the end.

  5. You should put a bowl (cereal bowl) over that plate for the germentatint(sp?) seed To reduce light, and keep moisture....Maybe I'm not an idiot afterall?
