Feminized Seeds First time poster here (I posted this in the newbie folder also) so please bare with me. It's been about 12 years since I've grown and allot has changed. I just received 11 feminized seeds in the mail (5 and 6, 2 strains) that I plan on using as my mothers. I've never worked with fem seeds so here are my questions....... 1) Do I need to sprout them all or just 3 or 4 of them and chose the best plant? 2) Do I need to sex the mother plant or can I just assume that it will be a female? 3) What is the ratio of male to female with fem seeds? I'm so glad that I found this site and I want to thank all the great posters who have provided so much info! Cheers! Freak1
i'd sprout em all...keep veggin the best for mothers...and bud the others....im pretty sure they will always be mostly female...BUT (im telling you this from feminized exprience) Feminized seeds often grow into hermapherdite plants...thats because fem seeds come from hermies. that being said...you definatly can make it out with some great dank if you keep the plants happy and dont stress them.... good luck bro
>>>Feminized seeds often grow into hermapherdite plants...thats because fem seeds come from hermies. Are you saying that they are less stable than normal seeds? >>>some great dank if you keep the plants happy and dont stress them. Isn't topping and cloning considered stress?
Feminized seeds, if grown correctly shouldn't have hermaphroditic tendencies no more than regular seeds if done correctly. The point of buying them is to only germinate the ones you want to grow without having to worry about males. That's why you get less per pack for more money! But you do need to watch for males because you may get some. They are not 100% female, and yes you may get a Hermie like I said previously, GOOD LUCK!!
Personally, I wouldn't buy feminized seeds. Simply because the plants are not 100% female. A good female plant that comes from feminized seed will usually have a couple of male parts on them. They look like little bananas on the bud. They usually show up towards the end of the budding stage as they are finishing up. A bad female plant that comes from feminized seed will have a whole crap load of male parts (flowers) on them. Those are the ones you don't want. If the male parts open up and shed pollen on the female pistils, you will have feminized seeds. Or hermies as they are so called. Hermaphroditic plants come in percentages. You want the ones that are like 98 to 99 percent female and only 1 or 2 percent male. Have you ever bought a nice bag of sinsemilla that had a nice cola in it only to find out that it had one lone seed in it. If you have, then most likely it came from a feminized seed. That one lone seed will also be a female just like its mother. The good thing about feminized seed is that you don't have to spend a lot of time trying to identify the sex of the plants. So there is a convenience factor there. Altering the photoperiod, by shedding light on the plants during the dark cycle can cause stress to the plants. Causing them to turn hermaphroditic. I like regular seeds because most likely they will either be 100% female or 100% male. With regular seeds it's a waiting game for the plants to show their sex. That's their only down side.
