So If i'm right this movie is based on a book. Anyone know the title, or who it's by? Also if anyones read it let me know what you thought. I want to pick it up, sounds like a good read. Awsome movie by the way
uh, big fat no? dr. gonzo (benicio del toro's character) wasnt even a real person. it was highly edited and written with tons of poetic license. its like an interview with bob dylan, its really entertaining and fascinating, until you realize its all bullshit meant to drag you along.
if ur gonna pick that up pickup the biography on hunter s. thompson, i cant quite remember the title, but it also starts with fear and loathing, but its not fear and loathing on the campaign trail the books outside is white n has trippy artwork on it, hopefully you'll find it, i'll try lookin it up for ya real quick Fear and Loathing: The Strange and Terrible Saga of Hunter S. Thompson
that is not true at all. Much was exaggerated. In the end it was not a not fiction book. It was a novel, fictional. thats not totally true either. Dr. Gonzo was based on HST's real life attorney (Oscar Zeta Acosta). And its based on a trip they took together to a District attorney drug conference. Its like when a move is "based on a true story". There are elements of truth and its all based around truth but a lot of artistic license was used.
it was ralph steadman that took the trips with thompson, and also who did all the crazy trippy artwork HST heads enjoy. the attorney Acosta was mainly just a correspondent with thompson, most of their conversations being over a phone or mail. whenever thompson actually got in trouble, it was the attorney staff on rolling stone's retainer that helped him out. and the reason he was in las vegas is because he was covering the baja 500, seeing as he was a sportswriter for rolling stone, the drug conference was just an afterthought.
I just watched this movie today and I felt like I couldn't understand what was going on half the time.
shit im tiered. Yea he was covering the race and they ran into the drug convention. But it was Acosta who took the trips with him. steadman was only the illustrator and friend of thomsons. Steadman never was on the trips the book is based on.
Yep, Steadman was a very close friend of Hunter's. None of you guys read the classic scene when they maced their way out of a restaurant? I'll look through my HST collection to see which book it was in (I think it was The Great Shark Hunt), but Steadman also made a reference to it in 'Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S Thompson', which was a great narrative on his life, told by old and new friends, relatives, even employers.
