Fabric pot size?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by karumbakuwa, Jun 1, 2019.

  1. These numbers are floating around the internet:
    • 2-3 gallon pot ~ 12-inch plant
    • 3-5 gallon pot ~ 24-inch plant
    • 6-8 gallon pot ~ 36-inch plant
    • 8-10 gallon pot ~ 48-inch plant
    • 12 and over gallon pot ~ 60-inch plant
This is if you are using normal pots, I'd like the final height of my plant to be around 4 foot (from soil to top of plant, is that the right way to measure?), so from this I'd take between 8-10 gal pot.

However, it often states that if you use a fabric pot then go double that amount to save losing so much moisture. So a 16-20 gallon pot would be the suitable size? That seems crazy big. Someone please confirm before I hit purchase! :)

  2. I think a lot of it depends on genetics and growing style.
Friend of mine grows his plants to about 5ft in 5 gallon fabric pots. He also often uses 10 gallon fabric pots but only fills them 1/2 to 2/3rds full of soil to reduce the overall height in his 8.5ft high closet but because of the larger diameter, there's quite a bit more room for root growth. He's still able to crank out giant bushes in those 1/2 filled 10 gals!

  3. I'm looking at 9 gallon pots and was gna go upto 18 if necessary. But there are only a few sites/resources out there that recommend double size, 9 gallons may be good enough then huh. Can someone experienced confirm this?

  4. I have done, two, four and a half foot plants in two gallon fabrics (I just measured one). That was my first grow.
I have, since, found a five gallon fabric to be a handy size to grow and move around.

I'm growing in a 3x3, going ot keep my plants at 4ft.. using 3gallon smart pots.. I think 9gallongs would be a bit overkill for 4ft.. if you can, just go with a couple sizes.. then next time youll know what direction to take..

  8. What if you lst? How do you figure your height if you train them?

  9. A 9 or 10gal pot has the potential to grow a huge plant, depending on strain and training methods.
I mean, here's a 2.5ft plant grown entirely in a 1/4 gallon container. It's definitely not even close to being an ideal sized pot but this strain is a super stretchy hemp/CBD variety that probably wouldve grown 20ft tall in a 10 gallon container! ...way too big for my living room window ;) LOL

I'd check some grow journals to see how big 10 gallon plants can get. You might find 3's and 5's are actually sufficient for whatever strain and style of grow you've got going.
As mentioned above, might be fun to get a variety of sizes and compare the results.
    Best of luck!

  10. Checking grow journals! Sounds like a great resource that slipped my mind. I'll do that mate. I'm going to stick with the '2 gallons per foot' rule then add a lil extra to lower the evaporation rate. So it'll be 9 gallons for a 4 footer.

As for the training, I'm doing the mainlining technique and doing the second trim tomorrow! First grow so needing all the love n support :)

  11. I've started mainlining already, broke one of the stems n had to tape him up. Fingers have been crossed for 2 days :) I'll be starting another topic for some advice about the lil guys mutation because of it. I got 2 others that are gna be monsters if they're recovery rate is anything to go by though.
