    Hey guys,

I'm about 2 weeks into my first "serious" grow attempt. I tried when I was younger but didnt take it serious and almost burned my parents house down. To be honest, compared to you all this is not serious at all, more of an experiment which I'm taking more and more serious as I see positive exciting results i.e. plant growth :) At this point, I have 2 plants which are about 5" high and have about 4 pairs of leaves which i just transplanted from small styro-foam beginner cups into much larger growing pots. I also have one small seedling which sprouted up in the same cup as another plant and I quickly removed and put into another styro-foam cup, it's still unclear if it will survive to be a plant, but I wanted to be sure it didnt make the other plant a male. I'm using a mixture of natural sunlight and 2 Sylvania "energy saving" soft white CFL bulbs I found at the house. Package says its a 60 watt replacement, light output is 800 lumens, energy used is 13 watts. I know this is no where near enough light for the plants, and most of their growth happens from the natural sunlight. I also have them in miracle gro nutrient rich soil and have a fan on in their growing room with reflective walls. I have pictures, which are included in this post. Okay, so... since the plants are doing so well, I'm going to make a trip to walmart and pick up some better lighting. Also, I'm going to paint the walls of the space white instead of using the aluminum foil as I have, I've heard this is better. I only water the plants when the soil becomes obviously dry, because I've read about the harmful side effects of over-watering. I would appreciate any comments, advice, ect (especially on the best, cheapest lighting I can get at walmart, remember, just for 2 plants)

  2. that looks so dangerous..... but i guess nice closet grow... just be careful you dont want to burn your room down

  3. Yes I know, it will be improved. There is nothing flamable in the actual space, the white cloth is outside a panel covering the space. Also, the lights really aren't that hot. I'm moving the whole thing up to the attic when the plants get bigger. For now, I'm taking out the tinfoil and painting the walls white, and basically just going to clean up the space.

  4. Another tip is to turn the CFLs on thier "side" horizontally above the plant with a reflector of some sort. You can supplement the sides with more CFLs if you like as they get bigger.

  5. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to walmart tonight to buy some new light sockets, reflecters and bulbs. I'm guessing that I'm going to buy higher watt CFLs with a reflector type socket, but another option is florescent tube lighting. Which is better for growth, florescent tube lighting or the spiral CFL type? Also, what wattage and what type of light (soft white, ect ect) is best?

  6. I use the 4' hangers from Wallyworld with the cool blue 6500K 32w bulbs. I have 2 sets for 128 total watts and 10800 lumens. I personally like tubes better with reflectix but everyone is different.
