Hey guys. This is my first grow of any sort. I need some advice on what to do to get the most yield out of the non ideal situation I've put myself in with these plants. (assuming at least 1 is female.) I wanted to experiment and try to get yield, while not spending any money. Just what I had around the house. Of course due to cannabis laws, I have to have a stealth grow as well. (closet grow) I germinated 4 seeds I found in my desk. 3 of those seeds were able to be put into soil. (1 didn't work and looked damaged.) Amazed that they had even sprouted at all, I decided to carry out the experiment and try to gain some knowledge as I immediately fell in love with this. I'm about 4 weeks into my grow and was told that unless I wanted huge plants, that I should put on a 12/12 light schedule early, as the plants would increase in size by 2/3 by the time they were done. Cfls were all I had lying around, so that is what I have been using. I am searching for advice based on that 2 of my plants aren't looking as healthy as I would have liked them to, and i'm hoping there are some things I can do to help them. I KNOW THAT GROWING MULTIPLE PLANTS IN ONE POT/ESPECIALLY NOT KNOWING THE SEX IS PRETTY DUMB, BUT KEEP IN MIND, THIS WAS AN EXPERIMENT. I am currently on a 12/12 lighting schedule and open the closet at night for better air flow. I have 1 fan inside blowing air out and 1 fan outside blowing air in. What can I do to help my babies? I know that a lot of what I have done isn't ideal, but I am simply trying to learn at this point. Best way to learn is just to dive right in, right?
Thanks for the reply man! I had it sitting on a box because that lamp doesn't bend as much as i would like it to. I noticed that leaves curling on one of the smaller plants and thought it might be because of heat stress? That's the only reason i put it back lower. I can definitely put it back, though!
Cfls don't put out that much heat like mh/hps, you can put those cfls about 1-3 inches away from your plant.Heat will cause them to have that "taco" look. Right now your plant looks like it might be over watered.
yeah and that's kinda what i was thinking too. I don't have anything for drainage honestly. From what i've learned, drainage is huge? I had a hunch that i was overwatering and did some research. How often should i water them? I've been picking it up to kinda assess how much water weight is there and go by that. I read that a lot of beginners over water because they're trying to do too much, so i grabbed a spray bottle and will be watering that way for now. Do you think the heat stress is due to it being in the closet and the actual heat rather than the lights? That would make sense, i guess. At midnight i'll be making these adjustments. I've already messed up my lighting schedule enough.
You should've vegged for a while longer tho. Look into some lst or other methods to get the most yields
What do you think i should do about the drainage? Should i try to poke some holes in the bottom of it? 1 in each corner and 1 in middle? Small obviously. Thank you so much for your help, man. I was worried people would flame me for being a newb lol.
The more drainage the better, so the more holes the better. If you can, yes make some holes in the bottom. Make sure not to damage the roots though. Any time, I'm pretty much a newbie myself too but I think I got the hang of the basics. Feel free to look at what I got going in my journal.
As far as controlling plant size, is that where topping comes in to play? Reasoning i switched the lighting so quickly is because i was told the plant would increase in size by 2/3 by the end of flowering and i have 3 of them in the one pot. Had thought about trying to transplant bc if one of them is male, i'm kinda screwed, but i figure the roots are all kinds of tangled at this point.
I was literally just looking at your journal. They looked fantastic man. You definitely seem to know what you're doing. I'll work on the drainage tonight and adjust the lights and stuff. I'll post results of the changes in a few days.
Take notice i am a beginner as well, but if there's any way to grt your lights on an even fixture, or dangling from sonething but at an equal distance from the plants as much as possible.. i doubt that it's getting any light from your top bulbs at all. Ive had the leaves turn up a little taco in my closet as well, i believe it was the temperature in the closet caused by the mh bulb and uneven ventilation. Also, if you have access to a drill, i would drill ( gently ) a few holes underneath and around the pot. Hope any of this helps
I'd do lst and topping. Topping will slow down the growth about a week or so though. Be sure to use clean supplies
This does help a lot, man. TY. Wasted electricity is a bummer and should be corrected. Thank you. Better ventilation and closer lights are on the agenda as soon as i possibly can. (midnight) I was worried about drilling holes cause i didn't want to damage roots if there are any that low. Maybe i could heat up a sewing needle or something and poke holes that way? Thoughts?
From what I know of, each plant should have it's own pot. If I were in your position, I would just rip out the male plant before it pollinates the females.
Okay, cool. I'm going to check out some videos on LST to find out the recommended string to tie it with and just a general idea of it. You guys are awesome
If i take the male out if there is one, will the roots rot and ruin my girls? Yeah i didn't expect for this to go this far at all. I literally just became obsessed with it during this experiment, lol.
Yeah i feel you i wasnt too keen on doing it at first but if you do it slowly, not letting the drill bit getting in the soil and dammaging any roots when it has popped the plastic, it worked fine for me. The needle might work but i think you would need bigger holes than that man..
okie dokie, cool. i appreciate the advice. I plan on doing everything that was suggested so far at midnight when the lights come back on. Oh and not watering for a few more days lol drowning them apparently
I would never in a million years grow multiple plants in one pot again with the lights the way they are. This is all a learning experience and i've learned soooooo much so far. Really exciting. Kind of a cool experiment though.
A sewing needle might not make big enough holes, who knows if it'll work. You should just drill the holes gently as the previous person said. As for root rot, I doubt it'll be caused just by pulling out the male.
