It stands to reason that being in better shape will keep you smarter. I don't know about brain cell generation, but that sounds awesome. To put my point in very rough terms, I figure that the tasks that neural system performs during exercise (balance, coordination, stability, instantaneous decision making) relate in some way to mental analogues. In addition, the body's basic physiologic capacities are challenged through exercises. Various salt/ion pump systems, nutrient partitioning, hormone signaling, and dendritic connections/growth can potentially all be augmented through exercise to be made more efficient. Once the body is running more efficiently as a whole, it makes sense that all processes within the body would be more efficient.
