So I genuinely met someone tonight, convinced that people were placed on earth by god 6000 years ago. I brought up that human bones have been found for more than 200,000 years, and genetics can link us back a few hundred million years.......... Nope, he jumped to the "missing link" theory, and ensured me that science has found no evidence of evolution. No evidence...at all...... I said well, "Science has mostly uh....proven that wrong....but I guess you don't get the discovery channel....". To which he stated...."Yeah, but the bible is more accurate than most scientific experiments." And I paused. And thought. Almost laughed a little. Then I said, "So a book written by people thousands of years ago, is more accurate than modern day science? A book, that includes talking snakes, and man eating fish?" There was silence. I ventured...."Can you talk to snakes? Are there instructions in the bible to talk to snakes?" He knew at this point that I was fucking with him. He looked pretty pissed. So I asked, "How long do you think I gotta be at sea to get eaten by a fish?" He replied, I shit you not......"If you don't believe in the bible, it can't happen to you!!" And.....It's many hours later now....and I'm still pondering that one.....
Hopefully all religious folk aren't like that but, from my experience, most do seem to be like that, unfortunately. Religion can become so fundamentally ingrained in a person's identity and beliefs that they become illogical and reject science altogether. Despite what most people think about it, I don't think that religion and science are mutually exclusive disciplines. Although I don't personally believe in any religion or higher power, a lot of religious people take the bible far too literally. I don't think anyone should take it at face value or try to use it as some explanation for how humans came about. Some of the stories might be useful as analogies on how to live your life and treat others but not much use beyond that.
Debating with religious people is pointless because they don't listen to logic or facts. If they did, they wouldn't believe in organized religion.
