Evolution and pain

  1. Although evolution is said to not have a set goal, direction, or intelligence, I've been pondering a subject lately.

We feel internal pains like heart, liver, kidney, etc pain whenever there is a problem. Why would we need the ability to feel internal pain? To tell you the truth I would rather die of a painless heart attack then a painful one. Were we designed to one day be able to diagnose internal pains?

Back in the caveman days internal pains could never be treated so the pain was pointless in a logical sense. Am I missing something?

  2. Sounds like a legit theory to me. Do less evolved animals have nerves to transmit pain from their organs though? It might just be that our bodies are wired to tell us when we are in danger by sending pain messages to the brain whether or not we can fix them.

Edit: BTW I love Michio Kaku

  3. if our internal organs are messed up then causing pain would help us know we are not healthy and any exaggerated or unneeded motion might cause further harm leading us to seek shelter and rest while we recuperate

just a wild ass guess though

  4. Its for the benefit of your overall surival. Feeling pain doesn't negatively effect you if your dying, but if your almost going to die and the pain alerts you to something that you can fix then its definetly a benefit, regardless of how annoying it may be. People who feel pain live longer than those who don't.

  5. Without pain, we wouldn't live to be as old as we do now. Tell me how not feeling pain would make your broken leg any better? You're just going to walk on it, gradually making it worse and in extreme cases, leading to amputation and/or death. Pain is what has helped us make it this far in an evolutionary sense.

  6. I'm talking about things internal items like organs. As a person in the BC's if your heart, liver, or anything else inside of you is in pain there is nothing you can do to fix it. There's also a good chance your physical actions didn't cause those problems unless you feel off a mountain or tree.

  7. Because a heart can't perform like a decent health care plan could. If you have heart trouble, you should see a doctor. If there is no pain, we don't feel unhealthy. The heart can maintain and repair itself, but, it can't destroy tumors or fix serious medical problems. The pain is there for a warning.

  8. Just because people in the past couldn't perform modern surgery doesn't mean there was nothing they could do to help treat an injured or sick person. You mentioned a heart attack earlier and how you would rather die from a painless one than from a painful one. How about not dying at all? Aspirin is often used to help prevent or treat heart attacks and its active ingredient is derived from a plant and has been used since the times of Hippocrates to treat pain etc.

Internal pain or problems isn't an automatic death sentence anyway and there are many ailments that cause pain without death so it's entirely beneficial to know you are suffering from something. Not knowing one is hurt internally or externally will always be less beneficial than knowing regardless of how severe the injury is because ignorance means one could never even try to address the problem.
