    Persuasive Essay

It is a well known fact that marijuana is an illegal drug here in the U.S. What most people don't know however is that marijuana may not be as dangerous as people make it out to be. This drug is known by many different names such as Tree, Aunt Mary, boom, Chronic, Ganja, Gangster, Grass, Mary Jane, Pot, Reefer, and Weed. and is known to have many different side effects such as hallucinations, loss of memory, and trouble with thinking. Although this seems like a very harmful drug it is also used to help with treating some forms of epilepsy and spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis.
Marijuana is one of the most controversial drugs in the U.S. but this drug may be presented to the audience to appear worse than it is. Most skeptics say that the side effects of pot can cause permanent mental illness when in fact there is no convincing scientific evidence that marijuana causes psychological damage or mental illness in either teenagers or adults. Other skeptics say that pot is a gate way drug to harder drugs such as cocaine and crack, however marijuana does not cause people to use hard drugs. What the gateway theory presents as a causal explanation is a statistic association between common and uncommon drugs. Most marijuana users never use any other illegal drug.
Even though the side effects of pot can be dangerous at times they have never been proven fatal, in fact this drug causes zero deaths a year according to D.A.R.N (Drug Abuse Warning Network) which is incredible since there are 85,000 alcohol related deaths ( Center for Disease Control), 440,000 tobacco related deaths( Journal of the American Medical Association), and 400,000 deaths from poor dieting ( U.S. Department of health and Human Services). So why should this drug be illegal when all of these other deaths are caused by completely legal substances. There should be no reason for the illegalization of marijuana.
Marijuana is an extreme cash crop. In California alone the legal sales of Marijuana is twenty four billion dollars. Sales from illegal pot sales have soared to over one hundred billion dollars. .With added sales tax to the marijuana distribution the U.S., our country is looking at a twenty billion dollar deficit from pot sales. In this economy the legalization of Marijuana is looking better and better.
Although there is still doubt in the benefits of marijuana some lawmakers are trying their hardest to legalize this amazing plant. In turn I believe that Pot should be legalized not only for the benefit of the everyday American who likes to have fun but also for the entire country and all the money that could be earned by this product.
