  1. \tOver 70 million of us Americans have participated in the act of smoking marijuana and over 10 million Americans use it on a daily basis. For the majority of human history marijuana has been legal. Marijuana has only been illegal for less then 1% of the time since its first known use back in 7,000 B.C.. We are locking up close to 750,000 people a year on marijuana charges and since 1990. The US "war on drugs" places great emphasis on arresting and charging people for smoking marijuana. I believe marijuana needs to be legalized because it should be up to the people of America to decide weather or not they want to smoke. Marijuana has so many benefits that it is a shame that we are locking up our own people for using it. There has never been any Marijuana related deaths and yet people 440,000 people die each year for cigarettes and this is ok somehow, over 100,000 people die from alcohol and yet we have no problem with this. I want people to know the facts instead of buying into this propaganda that created the law in the first place. I do realize that there is a negative to every positive but i believe once you are informed on the truths behind Marijuana you will to believe in legalization.

tell me what you think..help me make it better

i need 3 pages, rough draft by tomarrow :devious:

  2. Things to fix in bold, also stick with either upper case m in marijuana or lower.

  3. Aye, use that info posted above, and come back to us with more to work with. I have no problem helping to proof read your paper, but its hard to turn that paragraph into 3 pages :p

  4. I'm writing a thesis paper on the decriminalization of pot right now.. I could give you mine if you want lol. but two of my paragraphs are 6 pages lol.

  5. ^^ bad idea i forget if this is for HS or not but most teachers use turnitin.com and on a thesis i think they might investigate plagerism soo....

i got another link for ya http://frostfirecore.com/more-people-die-from-prescribed-drugs-than-all-illegal-drugs-combined

dont forget to put me in your works cited :D

  6. dont start the essay with a sentance like " over 70 of us americans..."

of us sounds a little too informal. for an essay lke this, you need to say something more along the lines of:

"In the past (insert number) of years, 70 million americans tried the drug marijuana, including 10 million regular users.

  7. I'm sorry but that essay sucks. Are you a freshman? Because writing long papers is easy and, with places like NORML.org, Erowid.org, and many others, writing 3 pages on weed is easy.

  8. also, using the first person to write an essay normally is not really accepted except if its a paper based on personal opinion, in which you can still avoid the wordd "I" and "my/mine etc"

normally this is reserved for personal opinion and philosophy papers.

it always sounds a lot more professional and informed when you dont talk as if YOU are the one presenting all the facts. you can state personal beleifs and such without making direct references to yourself. i hope you get what im saying, i just just have a lot of experience writing papers, especially agumentative papers such as yours (because ultimately you are making an argument for a cause) so i feel like i can help you a little.

pretty much, write your paper as if you were having it read to you. if it sounds silly or corny out loud, it will certainly sound worse when read by ones self. its easy to fall into a cliche when writing this kind of paper, especially since your enthusiasm on the subject may have the total opposite reaction to the teacher. most likely, they will not be in support of this issue (not that i dont think you should write it any way) but yea, if the teacher isnt interested in yuour subject, most likely your grade will suffer, no matter how experienced the teacher is. often, the more years theyve had in teaching, the less likely they are to find any interest in your article.

whenever i wrote oppinion or argumentative papers for one professor, i knew that he would only give the best grades to the most creative papers with the best arguments. in one, i wrote a crazy argument attempting to convince people that the neighborhood watch are actually communists trying to take over the world. not only was the paper totally ludicrus, it was crazy enough to get a good grade because it wasnt redundant, such as most major political and social debates are.

  9. Sigh. If you are really lazy you can make all of the periods in your paper to size 20. It isn't noticible and works really well.

  10. Marijuana is a slang name. Call it cannabis. Much more professional. Marijuana from my view is a derogatory word towards Hispanics.

  11. While that is a very clever idea, it's disturbing that anyone would put that much thought into avoiding a few extra sentences of writing...

  12. First of all, you just wrote a blot of text that has no beginning or end. Grab an example essay and outline, work up from there. What grade are you in? Manage your time better - don't wait until the night before to start your essay next time. I sound like a parent but damn, I'm an 18 year old freshman at college and seeing you posting on a drug-related forum asking for help the night before really makes you look bad. Another piece of advice: mask yourself as much as you can. I fantasize about essays I could write about my life and cannabis, yet I don't want to reveal myself to teachers and peers in such a way. Nobody knows I smoke until they step into my shade, see what a cool ass dude I am :p

Keep it cool, keep it simple

  13. As it's been mentioned before, don't use the first person (I, me, my, us, we)

There are no citations anywhere for the figures and dates you've provided

As hard as it may be for someone to separate their feelings and opinions from an essay on a subject like this, when you resort to talking about "propaganda" and "the real facts", it sort of crosses that line from an actual paper into a manifesto. Maybe phrase it differently, like: 'One goal of this paper is to examine the possible reasons why the federal government chose to outlaw marijuana.' That way you can imply that there were outside factors (Mexican immigrants, W.R. Hearst, etc...) and compare them to scientific studies from NORML or whatever.

  14. All I can tell you at this point is to follow the advice of those posting before me, because they know what they're talking about.

I wish I could have gotten this topic for my Junior research paper in high school, could have written a book on it lol. But nah, got stuck with the existence, or lack thereof, of global warming.

  15. here it is..i read all your comments but havnt changed them all yet..we have to turn in 3 drafts so im going to leave stuff to change so it actually looks like it imporved draft to draft...the sources arnt really done right but ill fix it later :)

Over 70 million of us Americans have participated in the act of smoking marijuana and over 10 million Americans use it on a daily basis. For the majority of human history marijuana has been legal. Marijuana has only been illegal for less then 1% of the time since its first known use back in 7,000 B.C.. We are locking up close to 750,000 people each year on marijuana charges and have locked up 5.9 million americans since 1990. There has never been any Marijuana related deaths to date and yet 440,000 people die each year from cigarettes and this is okay somehow, over 100,000 people die each year from alcohol and yet we have no problem with this. According to the prestigious European medical journal, The Lancet, "The smoking of cannabis, even long-term, is not harmful to health. ... It would be reasonable to judge cannabis as less of a threat ... than alcohol or tobacco." (norml.org) I want people to know the facts instead of buying into this propaganda that created the law in the first place. I realize that there is a negative to every positive but i believe once you are informed on the truths behind Marijuana you will to believe in its legalization.
\tIf Marijuana were to be legalized it would help our economy in so many ways. It is simple supply and demand. If Marijuana were legalized the price of it would drop resulting in millions of Americans with extra income to spend on other things to bring in tax revenue. Jeffrey A. Miron from Harvard University “...estimates that legalizing marijuana would save $7.7 billion per year in government expenditure on enforcement of prohibition. $5.3 billion of this savings would accrue to state and local governments, while $2.4 billion would accrue to the federal government. His reports also estimate that marijuana legalization would yield tax revenue of $2.4 billion annually if marijuana were taxed like all other goods and $6.2 billion annually if marijuana were taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco.” (about.com).
\tIt is ridicules how the United States is locking people up for there choice in self-medication. Self medicating has been apart of civilization since it began and there is no reason to lock people up for it. I agree that most of the illegal drugs on the street are dangerous but i do not believe Marijuana to be one of them. When parents talk to there kids about drugs they need to be more real with them and explain the dangers. But telling a kid “stay away from drugs like coke, and marijuana” they label these drugs into one category as if they were all the same. Once the kid tries experimenting with marijuana the kid may be left to believe that his/her parents were deceiveing them and they will be more likely to experiment with the other drugs. I think instead of trying to scare our youth as a way protect them. We should inform our youth with facts so they can actually make the decision with facts behind it. Recently there was a commercial on television stating that drugs support terrorism. We are constinetly bombarded with negative propaganda against marijuana and its time that our people get informed.
\tDid you know that more people die taking over the counter drugs and prescriptions each year then all the illegal drugs combined? I am not throwing marijuana in the same category as all other illegal drugs but this just goes to show that just because something is legal doesn't nesicarly make it safe. I don't know how many times iv heard of people getting serious back injury or surgery and then getting addicted to the pain medication that they were prescribed. Thousands upon thousands of Americans are dependent on prescription drugs just to function normally in daily life. Marijuana has no found addictive properties and I believe is the Pepto Bismol to life. Marijuana can help serious cancer patients deal with the pain in which would otherwise be unbearable, marijuana can help people with eating disorders eat, relive preasure and pain for glaucoma patients and it can even help people with sleeping problems sleep. If used correctly marijuana is a wonder drug not to mention it grows on trees!
\tOne of the big myths behind marijuana is that it has become substantially more potent then in the past decades making it more addictive and harmful then ever. This is completely false, marijuna has become signifigenty more potent but this actually ends up being healthier for the smoker. The more potent the marijuna the less the user has to smoke to get the same effects.
