So i want to start a grow in a small closet, about 3'x3'x3' and i was wondering if i could pull it off with four CFLs at 28w each? I know the more light the bigger the yield, however Im not looking for a massive yield or anything, just to succesfully grow a plant through the stages to accomplish a first grow.
You're looking at about 112W for a 9 Sq Ft. space which is really low. Any chance you can shrink the area down some to like 2'x2'x3'? It might not seem like much but you'd be cutting the square footage by more than half. Personally I would at least double up on the bulbs if you're able to. Your plant (assuming only one) will be fine for the first little bit of vegging but will probably be hurting pretty bad for light come flowering time. Make sure to read up on topping and LST if you haven't yet as you'd surely need it in that space.
i actually can make the space quite small if i need to...didnt think of doing that..and i have been looking into those techniques amd want to do them, im just afraid of messing up or putting too much stress on the female and having her turn hermie
Just do a lot of reading and don't be afraid to ask questions or better yet do forum searches, google searches to find the exact methods. You don't need to go all out. But really you are going to need to use at least one if not both of these methods. At 3 feet high remember that you still need space for your light. I recommend this thread for you: http://forum.grasscity.com/micro-grows/757288-microgrows-box.html
The best micro grow boxes I've seen uses T-5's instead of CFL's; about twice the lumens output per watt compared to CFL's. Sun Blaze makes two items that should be of interest. Their 2' 4 bulb system measures 23 & 3/4" X12' X 2 & 1/2" - very low clearance for lights in a micro grow box. Thats about 110 watts or slightly over 10,000 lumens, as opposed to 92W / 5000 lumens for four CFL's. Two of these fixtureswould fit in a 2X2' grow box, doubling your lumens to 20.000. Or they make an 8-light fixture approx. same dimensions. 5,000 lumens per square foot (20,000 lumens / 2X2 plant canopy)will grow some pretty damned good quality bud. The other Sun Blaze item is a simple light strip that can be daisy chained together. They can be mounted on side walls or in corners, pretty sweet. T-5's will still generate heat. Build a false bottom for air intake, and exhaust through the top or top/side through a carbon filter & you're set. Combine this with a two-plant SCROG screen and you will have a kick-ass micro grow box. You won't be able to smoke it all between grows. OR- if you need to stay absolute cheap on light, plan on (4) 23W CFL's for the first plant, and two more for each additional plant. I'd use eight total for a 2X2 micro box. You'll need cool white for veg (around 6500 Kelvin rating), and eight more warm white (2300? 2900? forget) for bloom. Wattage still around 200 but significantly less light output. The thing to keep in mind is that you'll save more from not buying weed than the lights will cost you. And the T-5's will pay for themselves in increased yield. Hope this gives you some ideas, now go do it!!! Bestaluck to ya.
Don't worry about topping and LST hurting the plants; topping is done in the vegetative stage to get good branching & grow more top buds. And LST is simply looping a piece of string around the longer branches and slowly, over several days, bending the branches down to (a) keep the plants from growing out the top of you box and (b) allow shorter branches to catch up, and (c) let side nodes of the branch grow into a top cola. None of these will stress the plant. A SCROG screen, with topping, accomplishes the same thing, even less stress. Get a good feminized strain of seeds. I believe Attitude sells singles now. Buy two at least. Or use bag seed from an excellent strain of sensimilla that only had "a few" seeds. Those will almost always be feminized seed. Your main concern with hermie-ing will be heat stress. Be sure you get the ventilation right. Build the box - Light it. Run it for 24 to 48 hours while observing temps inside. Dial in your exhaust fans and you should be good to go. Lots of help out here in GC, we want to see you succeed. Now, go do it!!!!
