Electrical overload

  1. I have a friend who is currently growing six plants in her closet. There are two computers running, 5 24-45 watt CFL's, 3 17watt T5 flourescent tubes, a personal fan, a larger fan plus chargers for phones every now and then, all coming from four sockets in the wall. She want's to add a 250watt HPS soon and I've told her it's going to cause a fire or something. Can anyone tell me their experience with this so I might be able to advise her. Cheers in advance.

  2. I also had electrical issues when I set up my new room. I live in a three bedroom apt and when I checked out my electric box I was shocked to find every plugin in my house was on just two 15 amp breakers. I tried to find answers and got hardly no advise on this subject. Most people just plug there lights in without thinking about how much electric they are drawing from a single 15amp breaker. 1000 watts of light is about 9 amps which when you add fans you are maxed out on one breaker because you only want to use about 70% of what the breaker is rated at. What I did was have a close friend run me a seperate 20 amp service from my electric box ro my room and put in a heavy duty 20 amp plug in. I didnt tell my friend what I was doing of coarse so i just told him I was going to run a big electric heater for the winter and slipped him $50. I spent about $50 in wire and a 20amp plug in so it only cost me $100 which was not bad considering the piece of mind I got. Now the only thing running off my original wiring is my fans.

  3. Sounds like to me she is running about 12 amps when everything is running at the same time. PCs are approx. 4 amps ea. To find amps: Divide the wattage by the volts. (Volts is the power coming into the room-i.e. 120v) So 250w/120v=2.083 amps. The space heater mentioned in the previous reply is yes, approx. 12.5 amps. A friend of mine runs a space heater, a small fridge, a stereo, a fan, a phone charger and a light in his bedroom. All off of a 15 amp breaker. Some of those items are not on all at the same time and not from the same recepticals. But it seems that she might be ok with running the hps light which would bring her up a couple more amps for a total of 14 amps or so. Try not running everything at once..............BUT I AM NO ELECTRICIAN... Just doing a little math here.
