So I was just scanning over some articles about the upcoming election and its another big year for marijuana legalization. I dunno if some of the articles were biased propaganda or what. But it's not looking so good for Florida, Alaska, even in Oregon the polls are looking a little rough. I'm really confused about what's going out there right now and why are people's views on Pro-legalization are falling slightly in some areas. I know in Florida a Vegas Casino millionaire is backing the Anti-MMJ groups, which is hurting the movement more than ever. But I don't understand Alaska at all. I mean they have had Marijuana decriminalized for quite some time. Our biggest win for the movement will be in Washington D.C. The polls are looking really good for the district. I don't think the bill will take immediate affect however if it does get passed. I think they will delay it for awhile until they can work out everything that needs to be done. But there still is that chance for Congress to completely over rule. Which if is the case I'm sure will cause some major uproar. Anyways, your opinions on why some states are not doing so well with the Marijuana legalization movement.
I have spoken about the 'culture' of cannabis in my state and got beat up for my opinions. I think it takes a culture of breeding and cultivation to be deaply ingrained in a state before something like this will pass. Here, the police never cracked down on cannibis like they do in other states, they left the guy with a quarter in his pocket go if he dumped it out. We had 3 solid breeders working in Colorado prior to amendment 64, and people of all political beliefs smoke ganja here. It was always laid back and nobody cared. The other attachment to 64 that we all felt strongly about was the promise of the first 40 million in tax revenue every year will go directly to maintaining our public schools. The whores in the teachers union all of the sudden switched sides on the issue with no resistance once they knew they were getting a cut!
I live in Florida and from what I hear the billionaire casino dude Sheldon Adelson is helping fund the No on 2 vote in order to buy his way in to Florida to open casinos. Everyone knows our Florida politicians are for sale to the highest bidder, and this is Adelson's angle. Of the 5.6 million raised by the No on 2 people, Adelson has donated 5 million of those funds. I urge all Florida voters to vote YES on 2........
Florida has long resisted casinos....by greasing the political wheels with an infusion of donations to Republican candidates he sees a way to soften the opposition to casinos... This ain't Colorado...we are in the deep bible thumping ignorant south...
I feel for you on this one. It will take time but the tide is turning...just slower in some areas! Have faith that it will happen soon!
A lot of people out west seem to have no clue exactly how backwards the politics are here in the south and how bad the dichotomy between the political parties is. It is so bad that the interests of the voting citizens get ignored in virtually every southern state and it is pretty much the politicians who decide the fates of these states. I am in NC which is supposedly the most progressive state in the south but the republican government has decided to ignore everything that we have done in the last 20 years and is trying to degress us to the point of the other southern states. Luckily the people here won't allow this and we have been rallying ever since the last election to force the state congress to listen (its called Moral Monday and there are rallies in cities across the state whose main points are to force the state government to hear the citizens). Statistics show that a majority of NC citizens are in favor of cannabis being legal yet the state govt has replied to this by specifically stating that they will not allow the issue to make it into congress which proved true when a medical cannabis bill was introduced and shot down using a wide array of redundant excuses. The worst part is this isn't even the worst of the problems caused by the GOP; our governor won't issue any money to Duke Energy to clean up or contain ash spills that are polluting our Eastern rivers and isn't even requiring that they do anything about it (the governor is their former president), education funding for public schools and any college programs that fall into the 'liberal arts' category has been drastically cut, and taxes and regulations on small businesses have increased while the have both been reduced for large corporations (particularly for Duke Energy).
Yup, unbelievable that the GOP has BSed the poor ignorant people in the SE US to actually vote against candidates and programs that are in their best interests... And on the issue of Duke Energy, they supply power to most of central Florida, and have had a monthly surcharge on our bills for some time now to finance a new nuclear power plant.....that isn't even going to be built! They say they've paid the money to Westinghouse and can't get it refunded....Bullshit..
I live in Kentucky and Florida is going to be the first state in the south to legalize medical marijuana. I knew something sketchy was up when i heard about Adelson. I mean why does a Vegas Casino owning millionaire suddenly concern himself with MMJ in Florida. I knew there had to be some kind of angle he was playing.
*facepalm* how can the GOP claim to be for individual freedom and small government when they want the government to control what people put into their bodies. Seriously, the DEA has gotta be the most counter productive (and wasteful) government agency ever to be formed
The GOP is projected to take over the Senate . They will control both the House and the Senate. We are in for a rough ride. Any gains made will have to go on the back burner for another four years. You fucked up America and we're going to pay the price.
Not true. The only federal bill passed last year in defense of MMJ was introduced by a Republican and passed by the House. On the other coast, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher Of California is the best friend we have to get cannabis legalized in California and nation wide! Take a look at the most oppressive states in the country for incarcerating mostly young black and Latino men using stop and search procedures that profile young minority men....Illinois and New York. Illinois currently arrests 17,000 people per 100,000 users while New York is a little over 11,000. These rates are triple any other states. Il and Ca are overwhelmingly controlled by democrats that encourage such behavior just to line the coffers. This comes at a huge expense to the minority community and destroys families and gives young minority men a criminal record that hinders their ability to get quality work to feed their families. Generalities hurt the movement and are short minded. You have to take each candidate on their own merit.
Just read today that there was another SurveyUSA poll released out of Oregon on October 30th, and it showed that 52% support 91 and 41% oppose it with 7% undecided. We still have to remember that voter turnout among young people, who support legalization the most isn't as high during midterm elections, and old people who oppose it the most are more reliable in these elections. I think the results of measure 91 are all going to come down to voter turnout, but I'm still hoping for the best on Tuesday!!
Not really. Even with control, they won't have a veto proof majority. So very little will change. Legalization will not happen in Congress or state legislatures. It will happen in the 24 states that allow citizens to introduce ballot initiatives like CO and WA did and now OR and AK. CA will be next and the slowly move eastward. While I think OR made a mistake doing this in a non-presidential election year where the voter turn out is predominately older voters, if it passes there, maybe it will encourage some in other states to join in 2016. We need to start working now to get Rand Paul elected president.
I'm a bit more optimistic in Florida, I believe we have a good chance of making 60%. It's not much to go on but if you check out the pro amendment 2 facebook pages versus the anti pages you'll notice a lot of unique commenters in the pro pages and the same people in the no camp. Seriously I could name them, Len, Yolanda, Sheep, Sheep. Now this may be the weed talking but the synergy on the pro side is pretty high..... See what I did there...? .... That's some good shit!
I live in Georgia and I would be so happy if Florida voted yes on 2 because that can only help other states around here and that would've be a huge movement for the southeast
Wow, you are telling me an asshole trying to get casinos is more important that those who really need marijuana medicinally? Fuck that fucking douche! I am not from Florida, but I hope yall take a stand and vote YES!
