Hello, First post. Second time grower here. Questions about Durban poison. I'm up in one of the northern most counties of Oregon. Slightly above 45 degrees latitude. Might be considered Portland area. However, it's further north a bit and the altitude in the hills here makes for a 5 to 10 degree difference in weather vs. Portland. Anyhow, I ordered seeds for Durban Poison specifically because it's a pure sativa that finishes earlier than say, Columbian or Jamaican sativas. My question is, if I were to assume the seeds would arrive in another week, that puts me at April 22. I'm counting 25 weeks from when I would ostensibly be germinating them, until the latest I want to have them out there (first week of October) Is this doable do you guys think? Ideally, I would have liked to put out 2 foot tall bushes in April, but . . . . that's not going to happen. Second question, for those who have grown Durban Poison, do you think I'd be better off planting seeds directly in the soil outdoors, or paper towel/heat pad/cfl's inside to veg until (?) And if I start them indoors, with the intention of going outdoors, should I right away start them with a light cycle that will be an estimated match of the light cycle that I will be putting them outdoors into? I had some trouble already this season (flowering) with trying to reduce some Indica clones that were under 24 hour light to the April lighting schedule before going outdoors. 20 minutes a day was what I came up with after shocking them with too drastic of a jump, and it took forever to get the lighting cycle down to what it now is in April. Anyway, they're back in veg and will probably be monsters. But the Durban poison, I wonder if I'm starting too late? If I have about 25 weeks total, seed to finish, maybe stretch it to 26, and a very stressful last week that is. By the way I did read that sticky about light cycles. That was SUPER helpful.
Are the seeds feminized? I would definitely start them outdoors ASAP. AND starting from seeds is totally different then starting from clones and acclimating them from indoors to outdoor so they don't flip. You won't have that problem with seeds. No artificial light. IMHO
Yes they are feminized. Thanks for the input. May can be a pretty chilly month around here. But this strain can apparently handle some colder climates from what I understand.
You should be able to plant outdoors in May as long as there is no frost. 1st week in June is when I like to plant clones. I'm in NorCal. At that point the daily sunlight is 14.5. Good luck and have fun.
DP is some plant a very stable fast vigorous grower. what breeder are you using i got mine from dutch passion and took 11 weeks to finish flower pistils went fiery orange early on but trichs was still clear right up to about week 8-9 good luck buddy
Durban can be a long grow. Maybe have a back up plan for the finish. The girls need less light intensity at the end Sent from my SM-G935T using Grasscity Forum mobile app
Actually the DP was the backup plan. I ordered seeds from Grower's Choice in CA. That was after I ordered some Nepal Jam seeds from ACE seeds in Spain, but then I thought, man they'll never get here in time, I better order something from closer by as well. I'm still late, but if they all arrive at a similar time, plan is to grow 1 DP and 1 Nepal Jam in the greenhouse, and 1 of each out in the garden, which has a structure with which I attach a clear plastic cover in the fall. So, there's that detail I forgot to mention. Thanks for the replies.
If u plant outdoors make sure u don't use any rockwool or anything at all unnatural. The animals will smell it and dig it up. Seriously, and Durban does great outdoors grows big and strong. Stretch will impress u, start the seeds in a container so the elements don't kill them . seedling can be killed easily outside by even one hungry bug trust me lol. Good luck Sent from my VS500PP using Tapatalk
Is it Dutch Passion Durban Poison? I have been growing a few every year in far out guerilla spots that I can't tend often. They are very hardy, here is a picture around early October, they usually finish between October 10th - October 15th for me at 43°N. The soil is all clay muck in this spot so I grow in pots and the DP is more resistant to molds than any other strain I tried in marshland and decent smoke.
I'm in Portland. I'd stick with an indica that finishes early. I find most splants will go well into October here. And it starts to get cold and wet. Super stressfully. Autos grow well here in summer. Just grow a bunch of those. You will get great smoke and won't need to stress. I'm done with photos here. Just too stressful at the end for me. Bud rot sucks!! Thanks for that. Good to hear more input. First grow a couple years ago I ran into rud rot and fought it until the end. Out there every day trimming rot. Some pics of my setup. Option 1: Grow the already nice looking indicas in the garden plot (room for 3) and save greenhouse for what I might be able to get out of the Durban Poison (perhaps even forcing early flowering by blacking it out for a couple hours midway through summer. But would need to figure out the cover situation) Option 2. Grow the already nice looking Indicas in the berry patch (a bit more private because I'd be over the legal number) and dedicate the garden to Durban Poison and the Nepal Jam (if they get here in time) and the green house as well, experimenting with blackening it out if possible. I just fear the wasted garden plot space if they're nowhere near finishing and I'm losing tons to bud rot come 2nd week in October. Option 3. Forget about Sativas already and focus on the plants I have, maybe adding to them with a couple clones of themselves. Save seeds for next year or indoor (when I get a rig that can finish indoors) Hmmmm. I keep changing my mind. I was just really jonesing for some pure Sativa. Been a learning experience finding out why there isn't much in the way of even mildly Sativa dominant clones available around here. Maybe there is, but I can see the reasoning. First plants shown are Mount Hood Magic and Dutch Treat on the right. Last one is Rude Boi. I think they REALLY want to go in the ground right now, but am waiting for a window of not getting hammered by rain and low 40's at night. The Mount Hood Magic looks like a Sativa dominant phenotype anyway, actually (to me anyway. I'm not an expert) MHM is Durban poison and Northern Lights #5 parents. Check out the Nepal Jam seeds here: Nepal Jam feminized sativa. Nepal Jamaica landrace seeds Ace Seeds I'm really looking forward to that too, but might have to wait. First pic is the Subcool super soil recipe. I'm going to experiment too with a cheaper more locally available version of it, substituting steer manure in place of worm castings and guano. Also adding some fish bone meal for the phosphorous and wood ash for potassium.
