Driver not pushing enough Amps?

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by Sc00byD00bie, Jul 12, 2019.

  1. I hooked up an HLG-120H-48 to a qb288v2 (well half a board but I dont think that would matter) and for some reason it only wants to give 0.5Amp to the board. Tried with and without the dimmer plugged in but it just wont go over 0.5Amp. Any ideas why this would happen? Is this driver busted?
    @Tbone Shuffle ?

  2. If that is all board draws then it won't.
You can have a 10 amp driver for example and a one amp device, it would in theroy power 10 of those devices before you would see a 10 amp draw otherwise only 1 device would show 1 amp.

  3. Oh and the thing could be bad too.

  4. These boards are rated for up to 3Amp. Arn't you thinking of volts?

  5. Have you checked the draw from the wall?

  6. No but wouldnt it just be very close and slightly higer than the dc side? I dont think its pulling more than that really as the driver isnt getting very warm.

  7. Maybe bad wires. They're are low power and high power cords.

  8. hey buddy!
not sure if this is an idea worth checking or not... but I noticed it's a "b" series driver with external dimmer wires. Your pic doesn't show the end of there dimmer wires so I'll ask if they are currently connected to a dimmer control / potentiometer or just left unconnected. I don't know because my "b" series driver is connected to a dinner unit, but if your dimmer wires are currently not connected perhaps the driver defaults to it's lowest level output - in other words maybe the driver defaults to it's most dimmed setting without the dimmer wires attached??

If your dimmer wires are hooked up than ignore this - just thinking out loud since I couldn't see if/where your dimmer wires are terminated and trying to come up with ideas for your problem.

good luck, i hope it's not a bad driver (or board - do you have a second board you can try swapping and see if it makes a difference?)

  9. The dimmer defaults to maximum output when no dimmer is connected to these drivers. Regardless I tried with a dimmer and it just dimms it even more.

  10. kinda figured that was going to be the answer... but ya never know what sometimes might be an off-the-wall idea pans out. :)
    hope you figure it out.

  11. Like is said probably low output connecting wires.

  12. Do you have any other boards you can try the driver out on?

  13. No these are 16AWG high voltage solid core copper wires, I use them on all my lights.

  14. Oh nevermind then also sorry if I came off rude earlier. Very new to LED and still learning alot.

  15. Maybe ill have to check. I mean I do but i'll probably need to take one thats powering another board.

  16. All good ;)

  17. Well the watt draw will tell you what your acually pulling from the wall, amd could be used to confirm what your seeing.

I wonder if the driver is in CC mode?

Considering it is a CV driver, it should just push full power like your thinking it should.

    Hmmm....

    But at 0.5 amps, it should be delivering ~24 watts. 0.5A x 48V = 24 watts

    Try 2 halfs?
