Before we figured out selective breeding humans and dogs were equal partners in the world domination game. Dogs were basically specialist tradescreatures that helped humans in exchange for food and shelter. Then we started locking them up and telling them who they could and could not fuck. And dogs helped us do it to other species including our own.
Dogs/humans exist in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship. Some humans become overly obsessed with the animal and give it human traits. We breed them for reasons, whether it's for hunting or other things (some immoral). They are better off with us in their world.
I don't think hunter gathers could keep human slaves. It hard to keep people from running away without a solid building unless you have gaurds watching at all times which is probably not worth the labour costs.
We feed the dogs, we house them, keep them healthy, even pick up their shit.... dogs are the masters, not us
The people of tanzania hunt with dogs today, most of their diet is baboon these days. Sometimes they can run a deer thing to exhaustion. Amazing how little water they need to survive in the heat, a mouthful goes a long ways. I don't know about hunter gatherer times of slavery, but slavery has been all over the world for a very, very long time. Even merely 200 years ago, germans I believe, or near there, traveled the world capturing humans to keep in what was known as a "human zoo"
only a few animals have a trace of moral consciousness and are self aware... dogs aren't one of them. many animals, when food is scarce, will sacrifice one or more of their young in favor of the stronger offspring. statistically, 100% of dogs are cared for by humans ... stories about wolves raising children are just stories ...well, to Trump, maybe not.
