I don't think I've refered to something or someone as "gay" meaning stupid or inferior in quite some time. But I have said things like "gay-ass." For example, "That gay-ass son of a bitch needs to hurry up."
I hate it too. It's not cool at all. The situation was moderated on a consistent basis but then a lot of people bitched and we backed off of it. LOL!! Either we moderate too much or not enough. Shocked, I am!!! I guess we'll have to see what kind of results come from your poll.
I concur, not cool guys. It's not something that should be thrown around in jest like it is. Immature and an obvious sign of not being old enough to use the forums.
The use of "gay" as an offensive adjective is the result of a semantic shift within a culture. Most changings in meaning of this type originate from "valley" or "prep" teenagers in southern California and spread throughout the world due to the influence America has through media. In a few decades, perhaps, when the shift is fully in place it will no longer be thought of as offensive to homosexuals, but merely as homonym of "gay" (homosexual). Like (money) "bank" and (river) "bank". However, most semantic shifts originally resulted in a likening between two things so there is a link between the preppy use of "gay" as a negative adjective, and as slang for "homosexual". What I'm rambling about is that after some time the link will be forgotten about, and a full-on homonym will have been created. But yeah, it is a bit poopy...
i know 2 gay guys who call things gay. not because they think it has homosexual tendencies or could even be mistaken as gay, but because the word has more than 2 meanings these days. like it or not. in conclusion, i say it occasionally and will probably continue to use it. at least i'm honest though, and not a hypocrite because i know some people will post here saying they don't like the word yet half of their posts involve something gay. ok, i'm about to be late for work now so i'm done. later.
i dont here it much around here anymore. i guess everyone is just starting to realize that most things, places, ideas etc. are completely comfortable with the opposite sex. it never really bothered me too much, but then to my knowledge, i was never around any gay people.. maybe i was, and everyones usage of "gay" was why i never met any open homosexuals?
Its something i hear all the time from my brother, things like "goh, SNL is gay", "man, that game is gay". Shit like that. It is annoying as hell. Think of a better word that gay.
I hear people at work use it more than I'd like. It's just become an insult word and it shouldn't be because it means happy besides being gay.

I know that most people that use terms like this aren't truly homophobic at heart. They just use the word to express anger/dissapointment whatever. Doesnt bug me,
Like SirSeedy I know a few gay people who'll call things gay all the time. I think it's kind of how black people can say "nigga" and stuff though and others can't. Either way, I don't think it's that big of a deal, I'll let it slip once in a while.
